I think the most important thing my parents did for me was to encourage me to read. In the beginning, I used to read romances a lot but then a time came when I outgrew them. I would not say that I didn’t enjoy reading them. I did. But as I grew and started reading more I came around different genres which started to attract me. One such genre was historical fiction. It was very surprising because in school I was never interested in history but I guess that’s what fiction does. It can make even history sound interesting. And then it is about the writer too. How things are presented to the readers makes a lot of difference. One such writer is Khaled Hosseini. He with his brilliant writing style not only presented stories but gave me many life lessons which I’ll be sharing with you all, today. The Kite Runner is the first book of Khaled Hosseini which I read. It’s a beautiful book focused on relationships. So, I’ll be discussing lessons from that book.
- A point would come in your life where your one decision would change everything about your coming life, and you know it would. So, take that decision wisely without any cowardice in it.
Every moment we live and every decision we take leads our way to the future and decides what our future looks like. But some fleeting moments always hold more value in contributing to shaping our future, and those decisions are the ones we should be wary of because they are the moments that would save us from having a gloomy future. This book beautifully helped me concreting my idea that our choices should not be taken out of extreme emotions of pain, hurt, jealousy, etc. Humans tend to forget the humanity in these intense emotions and extreme emotions tend to make us irrational. The Kite Runner tells us a big deal about how a fleeting moment of extreme emotions can turn your life.
- Free yourself from regret as soon as you can.
I have always considered regret as the most painful emotion. It is an emotion that can drown your whole life in sadness. With it, you can never fully live your life; there would always be this one thing that would weigh your heart down and will never let you give your heart entirely to other relations. Regret is such a powerful feeling that you just cannot live with it and The Kite Runner describes it very well.
- Forgiving themselves is the toughest thing a person can do.
Forgiving is an act of great courage. Where forgiving others is difficult, what more difficult is to forgive our own selves. There were many times in my life when I was hopeless and directionless. I didn’t stand up on things that I should have, and I didn’t do things when there was time. So, I kept on punishing myself for my past deeds. I learned it the hard way that we can only move on when we forgive ourselves. There is just no other way. We need to sit with ourselves and forgive ourselves for each and everything that we have held ourselves accountable in the past.
- Suppressed emotions always find their way to the surface
Either it is love or hate or any other emotion, they have their own weird way to come to us in our most unexpected times. This book made me learn that there is no point in suppressing emotions, as in starting it would seem like nothing, but with time it would become a storm inside us, shaking us from within and soon that storm will surface on the upper layer and start to affect the life that we have build in so many years. It is better to deal with things when you feel them. Otherwise, you are just weighing your conscience down with something that would make your life a disaster in the coming future.
- Jealousy is something that can eat up your relationships.
Jealousy is mostly seen to be experienced when love is shared. I have experienced it first hand, and I would say that people should feel it. Yes, you read it right. But it shouldn’t be dragged. Feel and get over it. Don’t make it last longer than you can control its consequences. Humans tend to make decisions in jealousy and then they regret them later. Jealousy is a very powerful emotion, it can destroy our relationships in no time. So, we must be cautious in dealing with it.
So, these were some of the lessons I learned from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. Let me know in the comments section below if you would like to know the lessons I learned from his other books.
