England and West Indies players took a knee beginning the first ball of their Test Match on Wednesday to demonstrate their support for the BLM or commonly known as ‘Black Lives Matter’ Movement.
Each set of players including staff and officials assembled with the gestures both on the pitch and around the boundary at the Ageas Bowl to exhibit their support with the Black Lives Matter movement, with numerous west indies stars lifting their right fists with black gloves.
The kneeling gesture has been made before the Premier League since the beginning of the soccer once again in England last month.
“It was a great moment,“ Gabriel said, “showing something we stand for and that racism has no part in cricket.”
The tourists also elected to wear black gloves on their right hand and held up their arms with a fist in a show of solidarity for the widespread movement that had amassed worldwide support since the brutal killing of George Floyd in Minnesota, United States.
Joe Root, England’s skipper, said that there shall be a sense of unity and equal rights shall be granted to all.
“There has to be an equal opportunity and equal.” The root will be skipping the first test and three-days of warm-up matches due to the birth of his second child.
The Cricket matches were encountering severe delays in the schedules and there were no physical activities with the ongoing pandemic and restrictions. West Indies and England will mark a beginning to international cricket after a lengthy period on 8th July at Ageas Bowl. The sides will be featuring in the three test matches.
Several members of the England support staff also held up their fist in a supportive manner.
Holding and Rainford-Brent also delivered a powerful Black-Lives-Matter speech.
The boundary boards around the periphery of the Ageas Bowl also carries the name of ” Weekes” as a sign of homage to the great Bajan batsman of the 1940s and 1950s.
