The New Cinderella Is No Damsel In Distress

We have all grown up reading the traditional classic ‘Cinderella’ but aren’t we all tired of seeing princesses being shown as fragile creatures only waiting to be rescued by a prince? Well, we’re not the only ones to think so; Amazon Prime Video garners the same thoughts.

The Amazon Original ‘Cinderella’ trailer dropped on Tuesday, 3rd August 2021, and the netizens cannot have enough of it. Not only is it a remarkably new take on the classic tale, but it is also very progressive. The movie is written and directed by Kay Cannon, the screenwriter of the three Pitch Perfect movies.

The movie has an ensemble cast including, Camila Cabello as Cinderella (with her original song included, it will mark her feature film debut), English actor Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Charming, Billy Porter as a Fabulous Godmother (genderless god fairy for a change), Idina Menzel as Cinderella’s stepmother and will also star Minnie Driver, James Corden and Pierce Brosnan. The producers of the film are Leo Pearlman, Corden, Jonathan Kadin and Shannon McIntosh.

The trailer shows how the movie will be all about Ella chasing her dream, which is definitely not being married to a Prince. Ella is a passionate fashion designer and an aspiring entrepreneur. Despite being mocked by society, she dreams of being a businesswoman and owning a studio of her own that would sell her signature dresses.

But as the tale would have it, she has her fair share of the stepmother-not-allowing-to-go-to-the-ball drama, which by the way, is because she wants to establish herself as a designer amongst the wealthy people who would be attending it.

And to her rescue comes her Fabulous Godmother, whose first interaction is one to look forward to. And there goes Cinderella, in a white gown and glass slippers (which she points out are very uncomfortable), but what happens after she meets the Prince? That’s what we shall find out on the 3rd September 2021.

Another aspect to look forward to in the movie is the music. The trailer seems to hint at the incorporation of Janet’s “Rhythm Nation” and Queen’s “Somebody to Love” and some original songs by Camilla and Idina. Here’s hoping that this Cinderella teaches all the young girls to fix their and each other’s crowns and not be the damsel in distress. It’s nighttime! #IFYKYK
