Mumbai Mirror

Regardless of whether or not you celebrate it, Diwali is everyone’s most awaited festival. It is that time of the year when you just want to be home, amongst the people you love surrounded by all things good.

It’s a festival that doesn’t need a calendar to be reminded of; when Diwali’s around the corner, everything from the shops to the streets, from the parks to the playgrounds, from windows to the sky, everything screams of festivity. It’s a hard one to miss out on.

It doesn’t really matter where you are in India; Diwali is a vibe that is unanimously felt. It is hands down one of the best times of the year.

So here’s us looking at all the things we love about it:

1. Lights, lights, and lights –

the best thing about Diwali has to be the lights. There’s so much of it that one cannot help but just feel the darkness fading away. The houses, the streets, the shops, the trees, and everything is so beautifully decked up and twinkling that every corner is picturesque.

2. The sales –

well, we’ve all had moments when we wanted to buy something but instead put it on our wishlist because Diwali is nearing. Shopping is a community experience, and since e-commerce has taken over, we’ve been missing this feeling, but Diwali sales unite us like anything.

3. The sweets –

oh, who misses out on the delicacies of Diwali? It is what makes Diwali, DIWALI. The sweets. All colors, all flavors, all kinds of sweets keep making rounds and we cannot have enough of them, except for Soan Papdi, of course.

4. The dresses –

festivals are all about bringing out those locked up traditional dresses that come out only annually. It is the time when we all really feel like going back to our roots and wearing those embroidered/floral/colorful dresses we never had a chance to put on.

5. The meetups –

Diwali is all about parties and meetups. Meet up with friends from school, from the neighborhood, from the other neighborhood, from that other summer camp we went to, basically the time to get in touch once again before life takes us separate ways.

6. The dinner parties and game nights –

no matter how much we despise visiting our relatives, it’s kinda fun to meet them once a year, eat good food, feel like a family, and of course, game nights with cousins is the highlight.

7. A week off –

The eagerness to go back home, because it’s Diwali is unmatched. We’ve all counted days and hours for the Diwali holidays. It’s just such a warm fuzzy feeling to finally go home.

8. The positive vibe –

Diwali, more than anything, is a vibe. It’s felt in the air. The positivity radiating all around is seen in the lights, the traditional dresses, the rangolis, the sweet boxes, the gifts, the smiles, and the laughter rumbling in the air.

9. The all in all festive mood –

The exuberance around Diwali is unmissable. Diwali kind of sets our mood for ending the year on a good note. The winters are approaching; the days will be shorter and hopefully less stressful, the nights will be longer and cozier. Then there is Christmas and New Year approaching, so even when Diwali ends, we look forward to the next few days.

10. It’s like the good part of the climax where we know things will get better from now on.
