Underrated Short Films On YouTube

We don’t have the time to watch an entire movie in one sitting or a series. But we can’t compromise on entertainment either. Enter short films. Short, sweet, and completely finishable. There are so many good short films on YouTube that it can become difficult to choose a good one. So here are our recommendations. Read on to find out.

1. The Piano Tuner

If you’ve watched and loved Andhadhun, say hello to The piano tuner– the inspiration behind the movie. It’s an award-winning French short film, called L’accordeur initially.

It has a similar premise with a blind pianist visiting a wealthy household to play for their anniversary. What lies ahead? Watch to find out.

2. Everything Is Fine

Starring Seema Pages and Palomi Ghosh, Everything is fine is the heart-touching tale of a woman stuck in an unhappy marriage. The film starts with a young girl being visited by her parents.

The mother is sweet and giving in nature, whereas the father is cold to everyone. An entire marriage is unraveled with an incident as simple as not going for boating that the mother so desperately wanted.

In her words, “main nahi reh sakti Tere papa ke sath”(I can’t live with your father). Heartbreakingly honest, this one is truly sublime.

3. Ride Monologue

Ride is a song by Lana Del Rey, which by itself is hauntingly beautiful. The accompanying music video is like the cherry on the top. The cinematography is impeccable with dreamlike poetry by Lana.

The video explores a borderline personality and the internal conflicts she undergoes. With lines like, “I knew that it takes getting everything you ever wanted and then losing it to know what true freedom”, this one is for the poetry lovers.

4. Arranged

This is an Assamese short film starring Lima Das. Lima (of Aamis game) has a natural charm to her. True to her mystique, she plays the charismatic wife of an average man in an arranged marriage.

The cute shyness of getting to know a stranger spouse is heartwarming, and the wife’s story at the end is a tearjerker. Watch it for Lima!

5. The Relationship Manager

Another beautiful take on domestic violence and what one should do once one encounters it in real-time; this movie stars some big hats like Anup Soni, Anupam Kher, and Divya Dutta.

Anup Soni is a relationship manager making sales and managing clients. This is where Divya comes in. She is the wife of a client that Soni calls. Watch to find out what happens next.

6. That Gusty Morning

Another Assamese short, that Gusty morning boasts stunning performances by veterans Arun Nath, Kapil Bora, and Seema Biswas, and Urmila Mahanta.

The film is a heartbreaking account of a family learning to cope with Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically how the daughter faces the stigma of the disease as men reject her for marriage. Yet, she loves her mother and faces the dilemma of love and anger. I was sobbing by the end of this.

7. Juice

Shefali Shah is a SUPERSTAR, and you can’t change my mind! Juice is a tight slap on patriarchy and the systemic benefits that men reap out of it.

How our mothers are laboring in the summers in the kitchen without even a fan as our fathers lounge in the living room and call life hard. The movie is relatable and hence more chilling in its depiction of gender inequality. You have to watch it to know what I mean.
