The Grammy Awards were postponed on Wednesday, weeks before the scheduled Los Angeles ceremony, due to “too many risks” from the omicron variant, indicating the start of another year of pandemic disruption for awards season. The attempt at a return to normalcy was scheduled for January 31st in the newly renamed Crypto.com Arena with a live audience and performances, but no replacement date has been set. According to the Recording Academy, the decision to postpone the ceremony was taken after careful study and analysis with local and state officials, health and safety professionals, the artist community, and our numerous partners. “Given the uncertainties surrounding the omicron variant,” the academy warned in a statement, “hosting the event on January 31st simply entails too many dangers.”
The ceremony was supposed to take place in Los Angeles. According to the LA County Public Health office, 21,790 people in Los Angeles County tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday alone. As of Sunday, about 2,000 people in the area had been hospitalized with the virus.
When will the Grammy be rescheduled?
“We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date that will be announced soon,” said the academy in a statement. With two professional basketball teams and a hockey club occupying the arena, finding that date could be difficult. In its statement, the Recording Academy made no mention of a possible location change.
The winners of the January 31 show would have been determined directly from votes cast by academy members. Following protests from big musicians, the Recording Academy stated in 2021 that it will discontinue the use of anonymous review committees.
Grammy was also postponed in 2021.
The Grammys were postponed last year, as did most major award events, until early 2021 owing to coronavirus concerns. The show was moved from late January to mid-March and hosted in and around the Los Angeles Convention Center, next door to its customary home, the arena then known as Staples Center, with a scant audience primarily made up of nominees and their guests. It was a big night for Beyonce and Taylor Swift, but the live performances that make the Grammys unique from other awards events were set apart with no significant crowds, and many of them were pre-taped.
The 64th Grammy Awards have been postponed due to an increase of COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant across the globe. The show was supposed to be held on January 31. However, no new date has been announced. We wish you all the best in staying safe and protected. Stay tuned for further information.
