11 most memorable SRK movies of the 90s

1. Deewana (1992)

His film debut, opposite Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti. SRK only arrives in the second half, riding a motorcycle into “Koi Na Koi Chahiye”, and still walks away with the Filmfare Best Male Debut award. It was clear early that he could hold the screen against established stars.

2. Baazigar (1993)

A romantic hero who pushes a woman off a building in the first half. Abbas-Mustan’s thriller with Kajol and Shilpa Shetty was a huge risk, and it won SRK his first Filmfare Best Actor award. The line “Kabhi kabhi kuch jeetne ke liye kuch haarna padta hai” is still quoted everywhere.

3. Darr (1993)

Yash Chopra cast him as Rahul, the obsessive lover chasing Juhi Chawla’s Kiran, with Sunny Deol as the hero. His stammering “K-K-K-Kiran” became iconic, and the film earned him a Filmfare nomination for a negative role. It streams on Netflix.

4. Karan Arjun (1995)

Rakesh Roshan’s reincarnation drama put SRK and Salman Khan together as brothers, with Raakhee’s “Mere Karan Arjun aayenge” as its emotional core. It was re-released in theatres in November 2024, nearly 30 years after its first run. It streams on Prime Video.

5. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

Aditya Chopra’s debut and the film that defined SRK as Raj. With Kajol as Simran, it set the template for the NRI romance and won him another Filmfare Best Actor award. It has played daily at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir since its release on 20 October 1995, and since 1 November 2025 it has been streaming on Netflix.

6. Pardes (1997)

Subhash Ghai’s story of an Indian girl, played by Mahima Chaudhry in her debut, and the foster son who protects her from an unsuitable NRI marriage. “I Love My India” and “Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain” kept the album on repeat that year. Prime Video has it, and ZEE5 streams it free with ads.

7. Yes Boss (1997)

Aziz Mirza’s light comedy with Juhi Chawla, where SRK plays an ambitious employee stuck doing his boss’s dirty work. It shows his comic timing at its best and brought him a Filmfare Best Actor nomination. “Chand Taare” and “Ek Din Aap” are still favourites.

8. Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)

Yash Chopra’s dance musical with Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor set the template for the modern Bollywood love triangle. SRK won Filmfare Best Actor again. The film streams on Netflix.

9. Dil Se.. (1998)

Mani Ratnam’s darkest love story, with Manisha Koirala and a debuting Preity Zinta. “Chaiyya Chaiyya” on top of a moving train is one of the most famous song sequences in Indian cinema. It underperformed in India but did well overseas, and its reputation has only grown since.

10. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

Note: our earlier version listed this as 1999. Karan Johar’s debut, with Kajol and Rani Mukerji, was released in 1998 and won SRK the Filmfare Best Actor award. Rahul, Anjali, Tina and the summer camp remain pure 90s nostalgia. Stream it on Netflix or Prime Video.

11. Baadshah (1999)

Abbas-Mustan again, this time as a spoof-style action comedy with Twinkle Khanna. SRK plays a bumbling detective, and the role got him a Filmfare nomination for best comic role. It is silly, loud and very 1999.

Two more 90s SRK films worth your time

If you want to go beyond the big eleven, try Anjaam (1994), which won him Filmfare’s award for a negative role, and Kundan Shah’s Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994), which earned him the Filmfare Critics Award. Both show the risks he took before he became the romance king.

SRK in 2026: what has changed

Three decades after these films, Shah Rukh Khan won his first National Film Award. At the 71st National Film Awards, announced on 1 August 2025, he shared Best Actor with Vikrant Massey, SRK for Jawan and Massey for 12th Fail. The Hurun India Rich List 2025 also named him a billionaire, at Rs 12,490 crore.

His next release is King, directed by Siddharth Anand and co-starring his daughter Suhana Khan, set for 24 December 2026. For more news on the film, see our Bollywood section, and for more lists like this, our listicles.
