If the show were made today, our fantasy cast of Breaking Bad would have Nathan Fillion as Walter White, Robert Pattinson as Jesse Pinkman, Donald Glover as Gus Fring, Dev Patel as Saul Goodman, Idris Elba as Mike Ehrmantraut and Viola Davis as Skyler White. No real remake has been announced; this is a what-if recast for fans.
Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad ran on AMC from 20 January 2008 to 29 September 2013, across five seasons and 62 episodes, and won 16 Primetime Emmy Awards. More than a decade later, people still argue about the show online. So we asked a simple question: if a studio cast it from scratch in 2026, who would fit?
The original Breaking Bad cast
Before the fantasy picks, here is who actually played these roles. Any recast has to live up to these performances.
| Character | Original actor | Our 2026 pick |
|---|---|---|
| Walter White | Bryan Cranston | Nathan Fillion |
| Jesse Pinkman | Aaron Paul | Robert Pattinson |
| Skyler White | Anna Gunn | Viola Davis |
| Hank Schrader | Dean Norris | Mahershala Ali |
| Marie Schrader | Betsy Brandt | Melissa McCarthy |
| Saul Goodman | Bob Odenkirk | Dev Patel |
| Gus Fring | Giancarlo Esposito | Donald Glover |
| Mike Ehrmantraut | Jonathan Banks | Idris Elba |
| Todd Alquist | Jesse Plemons | Timothee Chalamet |
| Lydia Rodarte-Quayle | Laura Fraser | Alison Brie |
What the cast of Breaking Bad would look like if it was made today
1. Gus Fring: Donald Glover
Gus works because he is calm on the surface and terrifying underneath. Giancarlo Esposito played him with a polite smile that never reached his eyes. Donald Glover has the control and the stillness to try a new version, and he is used to playing characters who keep the audience guessing.
2. Jesse Pinkman: Robert Pattinson
Jesse is the emotional core of the show, a young man who keeps getting broken and keeps trying anyway. Pattinson has spent years taking strange, raw roles in films such as The Lighthouse and High Life. He could bring the twitchy energy Jesse needs in the early seasons and the guilt that crushes him later.
3. Saul Goodman: Dev Patel
Saul needs fast talk, comic timing and a hint of sadness. Dev Patel showed range from Skins to The Personal History of David Copperfield. He could make Saul funny without turning him into a cartoon. Bob Odenkirk’s version was so strong that it led to a spin-off, Better Call Saul, which ran on AMC from 2015 to 2022.
4. Mike Ehrmantraut: Idris Elba
Mike is the tired professional who has seen everything. Idris Elba has the weight for it, from The Wire to Beasts of No Nation. He can say very little and still dominate a scene, which is most of what Mike does.

5. Todd Alquist: Timothee Chalamet
Todd is one of the most unsettling characters in the show because he is so polite while doing awful things. Chalamet, known for Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird, usually plays sensitive young men. Casting him against type as someone this empty would be a bold, interesting choice.
6. Lydia Rodarte-Quayle: Alison Brie
Lydia is a nervous, controlling businesswoman who is always one bad phone call from panic. Alison Brie’s work in Horse Girl showed she can play anxiety that slowly tips into something darker. She would fit the role’s mix of fear and ruthlessness.
7. Hank Schrader: Mahershala Ali
Hank starts as a loud, joking brother-in-law and turns into the show’s most determined hunter. Mahershala Ali can carry warmth and menace in the same scene. His Hank would probably be quieter, but no less dangerous to Walt.
8. Skyler White: Viola Davis
Skyler is one of the most debated characters in the show. A new version needs an actor who makes her intelligence and fear impossible to ignore. Viola Davis brings that authority, and the audience would be far more likely to see the story from Skyler’s side.
9. Marie Schrader: Melissa McCarthy
Marie has comic quirks, but she also goes through real grief. Melissa McCarthy is known for comedy, and her dramatic turns have shown she can handle the heavier moments too.
10. Walter White: Nathan Fillion
The hardest role. Walter is a mild chemistry teacher who becomes a drug kingpin, and the actor must be believable at both ends. Bryan Cranston made it look easy. Nathan Fillion is known for charm, but his villain turn in Buffy the Vampire Slayer showed he can be cold and frightening. That mix is exactly what Walt needs.
Why a remake would be a different show
Breaking Bad’s success rested less on its look and more on how its characters fed off each other. Walt and Jesse, Walt and Skyler, Hank and Walt: those relationships carried five seasons. A new cast would change every one of them, and the show would become something else.
That is also why the franchise has grown sideways rather than starting over. El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie released on Netflix on 11 October 2019. Better Call Saul filled in Saul’s backstory. Gilligan then moved on to new work: his series Pluribus, starring Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn and set in Albuquerque, premiered on Apple TV on 7 November 2025 and has been renewed for a second season.
