Romantic anime movies to watch
1. Your Name (2016)
Two teenagers, Mitsuha in a small mountain town and Taki in Tokyo, wake up in each other’s bodies. What starts as a body-swap comedy turns into a race against time when Taki learns what is about to happen to Mitsuha’s town.
It is Makoto Shinkai’s best known film and many fans’ pick for the best romantic anime ever made. The music by the band Radwimps is a big part of its pull.
2. Weathering With You (2019)
Tokyo is stuck in endless rain. Hodaka, a runaway teenager, meets Hina, a girl who can make the sun come out for a short while by praying. They start a small business selling sunny days, but her gift comes at a price.
Radwimps return for the soundtrack, and the rain scenes are some of the most beautiful animation of the decade.
3. Voices of a Distant Star (2002)
Shinkai’s first major work runs only about 25 minutes. Mikako is picked to fight aliens in space, while her friend Noboru stays on Earth. They keep in touch by text, but as her ship goes deeper into space, each message takes longer to arrive, first days, then years.
4. 5 Centimeters per Second (2007)
The title is the speed at which cherry blossom petals fall. The film follows Takaki across three short chapters, from a childhood bond with Akari to an adult life shaped by what was never said.
It is not a happy film, and it hits hardest if you have ever lost touch with someone you loved. A live-action version directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama and starring Hokuto Matsumura was released in Japan on 10 October 2025.
5. The Garden of Words (2013)
A 15-year-old student who wants to make shoes skips school on rainy mornings to sit in a Tokyo garden. There he keeps running into a 27-year-old woman who is avoiding her own life. Their bond is about loneliness and support more than romance, and the film knows where the line is.
At about 46 minutes it is short, and Shinkai lets the rain and light do much of the talking.

6. The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl (2017)
Masaaki Yuasa’s film follows a young woman through one very long, very strange night in Kyoto, full of drinking contests, book fairs and street theatre. An older student who has a crush on her keeps arranging “chance” meetings. It is a quirky romantic comedy with wild, colourful animation.
7. Into the Forest of Firefly Lights (2011)
A young girl named Hotaru gets lost in a forest and is helped by Gin, a masked spirit. The catch: if a human touches him, he will disappear. She visits him every summer as she grows up, and the film builds to a gentle, tearful ending in under an hour.
8. Doukyusei (Classmates) (2016)
Directed by Shoko Nakamura, this film follows Kusakabe, a guitarist in a rock band, who offers to help top student Sajou practise for a school chorus festival. The two boys slowly fall for each other. It is a soft, simple love story with a sketchbook style of animation.
9. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas (2018)
The strange title comes from an old belief that eating an animal’s organ can heal the same organ in a person. A quiet boy finds a classmate’s diary and learns that Sakura is dying of a pancreatic illness. He helps her with her bucket list and slowly opens up to the world.
10. A Silent Voice (2016)
A new addition to this list. Naoko Yamada’s film follows Shoya, who bullied a deaf classmate, Shoko, in primary school and tries to make amends years later. It is as much about guilt and forgiveness as love, and it is one of the most moving anime films of the last decade.
11. Suzume (2022)
Another new pick. Shinkai’s 2022 film follows Suzume, a high school girl who travels across Japan with a mysterious young man to close doors that release disasters. The romance sits beside a story about grief after the 2011 earthquake, and it is his most adventure-driven film.
