Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) is one of the few Hindi films whose story you can follow through its songs alone. Aman (Shah Rukh Khan) arrives as the cheerful outsider. In “Pretty Woman” he gets the whole neighbourhood to sing about Naina on the street, a loud, public way of telling her to loosen up. It is pure fun, but it also sets up Aman’s role in the film: the man who fixes other people’s lives.
2. It’s The Time To Disco
Singers: Vasundhara Das, KK, Shaan, Loy Mendonsa
Naina slowly opens up. She starts dressing differently, goes out more and laughs again. “It’s The Time To Disco” captures that change, with Naina, Aman and her best friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan) out at a club.
The song also plants the love triangle. Rohit has feelings for Naina, Naina is starting to fall for Aman, and Aman is clearly drawn to her. The track is light, but the looks exchanged on the dance floor say a lot.
3. Kal Ho Naa Ho (title track)
Singer: Sonu Nigam
The title song is the film’s thesis. “Har ghadi badal rahi hai roop zindagi” tells the audience to live today, because tomorrow may not come. Around this stretch, Aman’s idea of giving Jennifer’s struggling cafe an Indian makeover brings customers back, and the family starts to heal.
Sonu Nigam won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for this song, and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy won the National Award for Best Music Direction. The song also won Filmfare awards for Best Music Director, Best Lyricist and Best Male Playback Singer.
4. Kuch To Hua Hai
Singers: Alka Yagnik, Shaan
This is the song of half-truths. Naina realises she loves Aman, Rohit assumes she loves him, and everyone knows only part of the story. The soft, breezy tune hides the confusion underneath.
It is also the moment where the film turns. Aman knows something nobody else does, and he begins to step back from Naina even as she moves closer.
5. Kal Ho Naa Ho (sad version)
Singers: Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik, Richa Sharma
The audience learns that Aman has a serious heart condition and does not have long to live. He hides it from Naina and lets her believe he is married, so that she will stop waiting for him.
The sad version of the title song plays over this stretch. The same words that once sounded hopeful now carry grief. Alka Yagnik was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for this version.
6. Maahi Ve
Singers: Sujata Bhattacharya, Sadhana Sargam, Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan
Aman spends the second half bringing Naina and Rohit together. “Maahi Ve” is the big, colourful engagement song, full of family, dance and Punjabi wedding energy.
It is a celebration on the surface. Underneath, Aman is smiling through his own heartbreak, and the family has also made peace with the truth about Naina’s father. The song shows how far the Kapur household has come since “Pretty Woman”.
7. Heartbeat (theme)
The instrumental theme runs through the film’s most emotional scenes, especially near the end, when Aman’s condition worsens. Naina and Rohit marry, and Aman lets go of his own love so that Naina can be happy.
The closing return of the title song ties everything back to the opening idea: live fully, because you do not know what tomorrow holds.
Why the music still matters
The soundtrack sold over 2.3 million copies and was among the best-selling Hindi albums of its year. Songs like “Pretty Woman” and “Maahi Ve” are still regulars at Indian weddings and sangeets, and the title track is a staple at farewells.
