Captaincy and records
Dhoni led India to the first T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. He is the only captain to win all three ICC white-ball trophies. His six to finish the 2011 final at the Wankhede is one of the most replayed moments in Indian sport.
He retired from Tests during the 2014-15 tour of Australia. His last ODI was the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, and he announced his international retirement on 15 August 2020. He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in June 2025.
