The most expensive clothing brands in the world are House of Bijan, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Versace and Yves Saint Laurent. These houses charge top prices for craftsmanship, heritage and exclusivity, and most belong to large groups such as LVMH, Kering and Prada Group.

Luxury fashion has had a busy couple of years. Several of these houses changed their creative heads in 2025, and Versace got a new owner. Here is our updated guide to the seven brands, with the key facts you need.

Most expensive clothing brands in the world: quick facts

Brand Founded Home city Owner
House of Bijan 1976 (Rodeo Drive store) Beverly Hills Private
Chanel 1910 Paris Wertheimer family
Louis Vuitton 1854 Paris LVMH
Dior 1946 Paris LVMH
Gucci 1921 Florence Kering
Versace 1978 Milan Prada Group
Yves Saint Laurent 1962 Paris Kering

The 7 most expensive clothing brands

1. House of Bijan

Founded by Iranian designer Bijan Pakzad, who moved to the US in 1973 and opened his Rodeo Drive boutique in Beverly Hills in 1976. The house makes custom menswear and limited pieces for a very small, very rich clientele, and it is often described as the most expensive store in the world.

Bijan claimed five US presidents among his clients, along with actors such as Tom Cruise and Anthony Hopkins. His past products include a $10,000 pistol with 24-karat parts and a limited-edition Rolls-Royce priced at $1 million in 2010. His New York store famously worked by appointment only. Bijan died in Los Angeles in April 2011, and the Rodeo Drive boutique moved across the street in 2020 after the old building was sold to LVMH.

2. Chanel

Coco Chanel founded the house in Paris in 1910, growing out of a hat shop she opened in 1909. Its best-known creations include the Chanel suit, often in tweed, the 2.55 quilted handbag launched in 1955 and the perfume No. 5.

Chanel is owned by brothers Alain and Gérard Wertheimer. Matthieu Blazy was named its new creative head in December 2024, and his October 2025 Paris show set the brand’s new direction.

3. Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton started in Paris in 1854 and launched its famous Monogram canvas in 1896. It merged with Moët Hennessy in 1987 to form LVMH.

Nicolas Ghesquière designs the women’s collections, and Pharrell Williams has led menswear since February 2023. In 2025, the brand launched La Beauté Louis Vuitton, a make-up line led by Pat McGrath, with 55 lipstick shades.

4. Dior

Christian Dior founded his house in December 1946, and his first collection in February 1947 introduced the “New Look.” Dior is part of LVMH, controlled by the Arnault family.

Maria Grazia Chiuri led women’s collections from 2016 to 2025. Jonathan Anderson took over as creative director in 2025.

5. Gucci

Guccio Gucci founded the label in Florence in 1921. Its signatures include the double-G logo and the red and green web stripe, inspired by a saddle’s canvas girth strap. Kering has owned Gucci since 1999.

In March 2025, Gucci appointed the designer Demna as creative director, replacing Sabato De Sarno. It was one of the biggest designer moves of the year.

6. Versace

Gianni Versace founded the brand in Milan in 1978, with its first boutique on Via della Spiga. The Medusa logo comes from Greek mythology and links to his home region of Calabria. Versace is known for bold prints, bright colours and glamour.

The Prada Group completed its purchase of Versace on 2 December 2025 for $1.375 billion. Pieter Mulier was announced in February 2026 as the next chief creative officer, starting 1 July 2026. Donatella Versace stays on as chief brand ambassador.

7. Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé founded the house in 1962. In 1966, it introduced “Le Smoking,” a tuxedo suit for women that helped make androgynous style mainstream. Its ready-to-wear line is now branded simply as Saint Laurent.

Kering bought the brand in 1999, and Anthony Vaccarello has been creative director since 2016.

Why these brands cost so much

  • Craftsmanship: hand finishing, fine fabrics and small production runs.
  • Heritage: most of these houses are 60 to 170 years old.
  • Exclusivity: limited pieces, invite-only shows and, in Bijan’s case, appointment-based shopping.
  • Celebrity reach: ambassadors and red-carpet looks keep demand high.

Buying luxury fashion: a few practical tips

Fakes of these brands are everywhere, especially on social media and resale apps. Buy from official boutiques or the brand’s own website when you can, and keep the bill, dust bag and authenticity card.

If you are buying pre-owned, use a resale platform that checks authenticity, and compare stitching, logos and hardware with photos from the official store. A price that looks too good to be true usually is.
