Indian Cricket Team’s former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been involved in a controversy wherein he’s been accused of hurling casteist remarks against his former teammate Yuzvendra Chahal. ,
A written complaint to the police was filed by a lawyer and Dalit rights activist Rajat Kalsan in Hansi police station of Hisar district.
The complaint says that Yuvraj allegedly made a casteist slur against Yuzvendra during an Instagram Live with another Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma.
In the video, that has now gone viral, the celebrated cricketer could be heard passing comments on Yuzvendra’s TikTok videos and saying that ‘Yeh b***gi log ko kaam nahi hai yeh Yuzi aur isko (Kuldeep).” To which Rohit Sharma replies, Yuzi ko dekha kya video daala hai apni family ke saath. Maine usko wahi bola ki apne baap ko nacha raha hai, pagal toh nahi hai tu.”
“We are investigating the matter. But nothing has been decided so far. No FIR has been registered yet, says Hansi Superintendent of Police, Lokendar Singh.
In the complaint filed, activist Kalsan says that “this comment has hurt the sentiments of Dalits as millions of people have watched this video on social media, Kalsan urged SP Hansi to lodge an FIR against Yuvraj and arrest him. Kalsan, in conversation with Indian Express says that “I had also submitted a DVD containing controversial remarks in support of my complaint. The investigators watched this DVD on Wednesday.”
The video is being shared by thousands on social media and the hashtag ‘Yuvraj Singh Maafi Mango’ has now emerged as the latest trend on Twitter.
Numerous media outlets reportedly tried getting a statement from Yuvraj Singh but none was received.
Later on, Yuvraj Singh came forward and publicly apologised in a tweet on Friday that “I understand that while I was having a conversation with my friends, I was misunderstood, which was unwarranted. However, as a responsible Indian I want to say that if I have unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments of feelings, I would like to express regret for the same.”
His apology comes a day after the police had started a probe in light of the complaint.
