3. Drishyam (2015)
Ajay Devgn plays Vijay Salgaonkar, a cable operator who will go to any length to protect his family after a crime at home. Tabu plays the police officer who refuses to let the case go. Nishikant Kamat directed this remake of Jeethu Joseph’s 2013 Malayalam film of the same name.
The 2 October alibi became one of the most quoted plot points in recent Hindi cinema. Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar.
4. Drishyam 2 (2022)
The sequel picks up years after the first film, with Akshaye Khanna joining as a new police officer who reopens the case. Abhishek Pathak took over as director after Nishikant Kamat died in 2020. It is a remake of the 2021 Malayalam sequel.
According to Wikipedia’s box office figures, the film earned about Rs 345 crore worldwide. Watch the first part before this one, since the plot depends on it. Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video.
5. Talvar (2015)
Meghna Gulzar’s film is loosely based on the 2008 Noida double murder case. Irrfan Khan plays the investigating officer, with Konkona Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi as the parents. Vishal Bhardwaj wrote the screenplay.
The film shows the same events from different points of view and leaves the viewer to judge the investigation. Bhardwaj won the National Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Where to watch: Netflix.

6. A Wednesday! (2008)
Neeraj Pandey’s debut film plays out over a single afternoon in Mumbai. Naseeruddin Shah plays an unnamed common man who calls the police commissioner, played by Anupam Kher, and threatens to set off bombs across the city.
The story stays tight and focused on the phone calls between the two men, which keeps the tension high. It won the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director. Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar.
7. Baby (2015)
Also directed by Neeraj Pandey, Baby follows a special task force formed after the 26/11 attacks to track down terrorists planning strikes in India. Akshay Kumar leads the cast with Anupam Kher, Rana Daggubati, Danny Denzongpa, Taapsee Pannu and Kay Kay Menon.
Taapsee’s character later got her own spin-off, Naam Shabana (2017). Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar.
8. Badla (2019)
Sujoy Ghosh returns with this remake of the 2016 Spanish film The Invisible Guest. Taapsee Pannu plays a businesswoman accused of murder, and Amitabh Bachchan plays the lawyer who tries to get the full story out of her in one night. Amrita Singh has a key role.
Most of the film is a conversation in one room, so it works well for a late-night watch. Where to watch: Netflix.
9. Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016)
Anurag Kashyap’s film is inspired by Raman Raghav, the serial killer who was active in Mumbai in the 1960s. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays a killer obsessed with a corrupt cop, played by Vicky Kaushal. Sobhita Dhulipala also stars.
The film premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes in 2016. It is violent and bleak, so it is not one for family viewing. Where to watch: Zee5.
10. Ugly (2014)
Another Anurag Kashyap film, Ugly tracks the week after a struggling actor’s young daughter goes missing in Mumbai. Rahul Bhat, Ronit Roy, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Vineet Kumar Singh and Girish Kulkarni lead the cast.
It premiered at Cannes in 2013 and released in Indian theatres in December 2014. Every adult in the story has something to hide, and the film does not offer easy comfort. Where to watch: JioHotstar.
