With a primary mission to de-escalate the war, the United Nations (UN) was officially established in 1945, amid the horrific events of the second world war, International leaders had proposed to create a new global organization to maintain peace and avert the monstrous war. But since its establishment there has been countless war, some of them are still going on, nonetheless, the UN has become a voiceless spectator. It depicts that the UN has been drastically failed against its motives, as in the past, the League of Nations was decayed.

At present, the UN has 193 members, against 51 members in the inception, representing countries all over the World.

Here are some of the greatest failures and ineffectiveness of the UN.

1.Israeli occupation (1948-Now)

After 1800 years of “Diaspora” from Palestine, the Jewish people took shelter again in Palestine and declared Israel as a state in 1948.

Since then Palestinians have been fighting against Israeli’s atrocities.

At the time of the creation of the Jewish state, 15,000 Palestinians were killed and 7,50,000 were forced to take refuge out of the country.

So far Israel never stopped encroachment of Palestine’s land against several UN resolutions calling to end any further occupation.

2.Kashmir dispute (1948-now)

On 5th August 2019, Kashmir’s Special Status was revoked and the Indian government imposed an undeclared emergency, house arresting of leaders across the valley due to the fear of confrontation between the Military and Civilians.

Before the special status episode, the Kashmir region has been considered as one of the greatest human rights crises in history due to undeserved killing, rape, incarceration of leaders and activists, torture, and disappearance of Kashmiri Civilians.

Despite the several voices being raised against the violence of government over the times in the UN, the conflict has not been solved.

3.Iraq invasion (2003-2011)

Before the invasion of Iraq, the then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan sent a delegation team to Iraq for searching the weapons of mass destruction. But they didn’t find any proof of dangerous weapons over there.

Despite this UN-led investigation, the US and Britain advocated UN Resolution 1483 that legitimize the invasion of Iraq.

In the quest for weapons of mass destruction, US and NATO forces invaded Iraq in 2003. And then the whole country was torn apart and ruined by allied forces, which led to economic instability and also gave birth to a terrorist group known as Daesh.

4.Syrian civil war (2011-Now)

In March 2011, hundreds of civilians marched to Syrian streets against the corrupt government. Meanwhile, the Syrian government launched a brutal crackdown on the protesters. And gradually conflicts engulfed the entire country which took the lives of at least 3,80,000 people and displaced more than 6.3 million civilians out of the country.

Since the beginning of the conflicts, the UN Security Council tried to pass several resolutions to handle the situation. But Russia used its veto power to protect its ally Bashar al Assad every time.

5.Srebrenica Massacre (1995)

In 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina declared their independence after a referendum.

And immediately after its independence, Bosnia Serbs beef up their military power in the country with the help of the Serbian government, which ignited the war across the country.

During the conflicts, the former General Ratko Mladic at Srebrenica in July 1995, gave an order to slaughter more than 8000 Bosnian Muslim men and women.

It was considered that the worst mass killing on European soil since World War II.

This mass killing in Bosnia is another failure of the UN.

6.Rwandan civil war (1990-1994)

In 1990, the civil war outbreak in Rwanda, between the Rwandan Armed forces and the rebel Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) lasted until 1994.

This Rwandan civil war is considered one of the worst ethnic genocides since the second world war.

During the conflicts, Rwanda’s Hutu government killed around 1million Tutsis.

As the genocides of Tutsis began, the UN ordered its blue-helmeted troops to evacuate the foreigners from Rwanda but didn’t intervene to stop the grave massacre.

7.Yemen civil war (2014-Now)

In the 2014 war in Yemen outbreak, when Houthi forces took over the Yemeni capital Sanaa. And Saudi-led coalition forces intervened in Yemen to restore the former president and field marshal Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.

In the poor Arab country, around 2,50,000 have been killed and 4 lakh Civilians fled out of the country to take refuge so far.

But the UN has failed to drag both of the rivals on an agreement to halt the war.

8.Rohingya crisis, Myanmar (2017-Now)

Myanmar launched a major military attacked on the Muslim ethnic minority in 2017. This brutal killing of its citizens, state-designed genocides took the lives of 24,000 civilians and forced around 7,50,000 people to move away to Bangladesh.

According to UNHCR over 742,000 of the persecuted minority escaped to Bangladesh since 25 August 2017. (Photo by K M Asad/LightRocket via Getty Images)

UN has described the Rohingya as the World most persecuted people, nevertheless, it couldn’t intervene in the matter due to China standing with veto power behind Myanmar.
