Finally after 2 months of a wait since its nomination, Netflix India’s Original web-series ‘Delhi Crime’ bagged the Best Drama Series title at 48th International Emmy Awards. It is not only a joyous moment for just Delhi Crime team but also the whole of India which has not seen any win in the recent past in any of the categories.

Although, the actual credit goes to the Indo-Canadian director Richie Mehta who himself wrote the script describing the actual event of that heinous incident of rape of 23-year-old physiotherapy student who was brutally raped in a moving bus by six men on the chilling winter night of 16 December 2012 from the perspective of investigation done by the Delhi Police.

The horrific incident shook the nation to its core when her dead body was found lying abandoned in some corner of the capital. The 7 hours long series discloses the discourse that underwent in the aftermath of the incident to crack down on the absconding rapists.

The show that released in 2019 received a massive amount of acclaims from across the board for its brilliant making and execution of the plot based on a real-life incident. The Best about the show was that it underlined the general notion of the public who sit back at home and just pass the comments on the policing nature of forces in such crimes but can’t see how tough the investigation is.

The highlight of the show was Shefali Shah, the lead character, who effectively portrayed the role of Vartika Chaturvedi which was based on the former DP DCP Chaaya Sharma who cracked the case within 72 hours of the incident.

During the virtual felicitation, director Mehta took the opportunity of award acceptance to honour all the women who silently suffer from the violence inflicted upon them by men, but also to those who stand up against the criminals and fight them with all might.

There were two other Emmy nominees from India, Prime Video’s “Four More Shots Please” in Emmy best comedy series category and actor Arjun Mathur was the hope for best actor award for his role in “Made In Heaven” series.

We at The Second Angle congratulate the whole Delhi Crime team for the big win. And encourage you all to watch the short series now on Netflix, if you haven’t. The show is not just a portrayal of how rape crimes shook the country and its aftermath but rather it shows to the crime and in its full complexity, pushing no disturbing questions under the carpet. It’s a must watch for sure.
