Indian philanthropy stats recorded fresh highs this year with a 100 per cent rise in the number of individuals who have donated more than Rs 10 crore over the last two years.
Since the inception of the list in 2013, there has been a three-fold increase in the number of entrants. From just 36 donors in 2016, the list comprises 112 donors at present
Wipro founder Azim Premji is India’s ‘most generous’ billionaire of the year 2020

1. Azim Premji – Wipro Limited
Azim Premji tops the list of most generous Indian billionaires of 2020. Wipro’s Founder Azim Premji donated Rupees 7904 crore in the year 2020 and thus won the crown of “most generous” billionaire.
As a business tycoon and a philanthropist, he always emerged as a big benefactor among Indian Billionaires like Mukesh Ambani and Ratan Tata.
A large part of his donation serves to enrich the field of Education. Last year Premji donated INR 1000 crore to the PM Cares Fund. Premji has committed to donating around 67% of his total earnings in the last year (March 2020).
In 2020, the promoter holdings in Wipro earned a dividend of INR 422 crore and the 2019 share buyback program fetched another INR 7,347 crore – all of these would be donated towards philanthropy based on his endowment pledge.
When Premji donated a large portion of this total wealth, the collective wealth of Indian billionaires had come down, according to Forbes.
According to the latest data, Premji has donated around INR 22 crore a day in FY20.

2. Shiv Nadar – HCL Technologies
Premji pipped HCL Technologies’ Shiv Nadar, who had earlier topped the list collated by Hurun Report India and Edelgive Foundation, by a wide margin.
Nadar donated INR 795 crore in FY20 as against in the previous years.
Premji donated INR 426 crore in the previous fiscal.

3. Mukesh Ambani – Reliance Industries
With a net worth of US $85 billion(As of March 2021) Mukesh Ambani succeeded in securing the third spot in the most generous Indian billionaire.
He donated INR 458 crore in FY20 as against INR 402 crore a year ago.
As the report says Ambani’s net worth is rapidly increasing therefore his donations too.

4.KM BIRLA: Aditya Birla Group
The fourth spot was secured by Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group, followed by Anil Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta Group, in the fifth spot.

5. Infosys’ generosity
With a donation of Rs 47 crore, Rohini Nilekani,61, was the most generous woman philanthropist on the list
The list has three of Infosys’ co-founders with Nandan Nilekani (Rs 159 crore), S Gopalkrishnan (Rs 50 crore) and S D Shibulal (Rs 32 crore).
In terms of the top five philanthropists in the country, Azim Premji, Shiv Nadar and Kumar Mangalam Birla primarily donated towards education, while Mukesh Ambani primarily donated towards disaster relief. Vedanta’s Anil Agarwal, who is 5th on the list donated primarily towards healthcare.
