The best poem-inspired movies include Bright Star, Dead Poets Society, Kill Your Darlings, Howl, Neruda, Sylvia, Poetic Justice, Romeo + Juliet, Stealing Beauty and Endless Poetry. Each one is built around a real poet, a famous poem or the language of poetry, and most are easy to find on streaming or rental platforms.
Films about poets are tricky to get right. Writing is a private act and does not look exciting on screen. The movies below work because they turn poetry into something visible: a love affair, a court case, a classroom or a chase. We have also added three more picks, including a Hindi classic.

10 poem-inspired movies worth your attention
1. Bright Star (2009)
Jane Campion’s film covers the last years of John Keats and his love for Fanny Brawne, his neighbour in Hampstead. Ben Whishaw plays Keats and Abbie Cornish plays Fanny. The title comes from one of Keats’s sonnets.

The film draws on Andrew Motion’s biography of Keats and uses his letters and poems throughout. It is quiet, beautiful and heartbreaking, since Keats died at 25.
2. Kill Your Darlings (2013)
Before they became the Beat Generation, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs were students in New York. This film follows a young Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe) at Columbia University and his intense friendship with Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan).
It turns into a crime story when Carr is involved in a killing, a real incident from 1944.
3. Dead Poets Society (1989)
Robin Williams plays John Keating, an English teacher at a strict boys’ school who tells his students to “seize the day.” He gets them reading Whitman and Thoreau and thinking for themselves.
The film won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Its “O Captain! My Captain!” scene, taken from Walt Whitman’s poem, is still one of the most quoted moments in school movies.
4. Stealing Beauty (1996)
Bernardo Bertolucci’s film stars Liv Tyler as Lucy, a 19-year-old American who visits a group of family friends in the Tuscan countryside. She carries her late mother’s poetry journal and hopes it will help her find out who her father is.
The setting is gorgeous, and the poetry is the thread that holds the mystery together.
5. Neruda (2016)
This is not a standard biopic. Pablo Larraín’s film follows Chilean poet and politician Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) as he goes into hiding in 1948, while a police inspector played by Gael García Bernal hunts him.
Part fact and part fantasy, it plays with the idea that the hunter may be a character in the poet’s own story.

6. Sylvia (2003)
Gwyneth Paltrow plays Sylvia Plath and Daniel Craig plays her husband, the poet Ted Hughes. The film covers their meeting at Cambridge, their marriage and the strain that followed.
Reviews were mixed, with some critics saying it lacked depth, but Paltrow’s performance and its focus on Plath’s writing make it worth a watch for poetry readers.
7. Poetic Justice (1993)
John Singleton’s follow-up to Boyz n the Hood stars Janet Jackson as Justice, a hairdresser in Los Angeles who writes poetry to cope with the death of her boyfriend. Tupac Shakur plays a postal worker she reluctantly travels with.
The poems Justice writes in the film are by Maya Angelou, who also appears in a small role.
8. Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Baz Luhrmann’s version moves Shakespeare’s tragedy to a modern, gun-filled Verona Beach but keeps the original verse. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the lovers.
It is not about a poet, but it shows how well Shakespeare’s poetic language still works in a loud, fast, modern setting.
9. Endless Poetry (2016)
Alejandro Jodorowsky’s semi-autobiographical film covers his youth in 1940s Santiago, Chile, where he breaks from his family to live among poets and artists. His son Adan Jodorowsky plays the young Alejandro.
It is surreal, colourful and very much an arthouse film.
10. Howl (2010)
James Franco plays Allen Ginsberg in this film about his poem “Howl” and the 1957 obscenity trial over its publication. The film mixes the trial, an interview with Ginsberg and animated sequences of the poem.
It is a good companion piece to Kill Your Darlings, showing Ginsberg a decade later.
