Mirzapur Season 2: Season 1 Recap, What Happened and What’s Next

Mirzapur season 2 released on Amazon Prime Video on 23 October 2020, two years after season 1 ended with the wedding shootout that killed Bablu and Sweety. Season 2 followed Guddu and Golu’s revenge on the Tripathis and ended with Munna’s death. The story has since continued in season 3 (2024) and Mirzapur: The Movie (2026).

What went down in Mirzapur season 1

Akhandanand Tripathi, better known as Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi), runs a carpet business in Mirzapur as a front for guns and drugs. His son Munna (Divyenndu) is hot-headed and desperate to prove he can take over.

Munna kills a groom during a wedding procession by accident. Lawyer Ramakant Pandit takes up the case and refuses to back down. His sons, Guddu (Ali Fazal) and Bablu (Vikrant Massey), end up in a fight with Munna, and Kaleen Bhaiya sees value in them. He brings both brothers into his business, where they rise fast.

The rise creates enemies. Munna is jealous of Guddu, Sweety Gupta (Shriya Pilgaonkar) chooses Guddu over Munna, and the Tripathis’ old rival Rati Shankar Shukla is waiting for a chance to strike. Guddu and Bablu kill Rati Shankar without Kaleen Bhaiya’s approval, which seals their fate.

At Guddu and Sweety’s wedding reception, Munna and his men open fire. Sweety and Bablu are killed. A wounded Guddu escapes with Golu (Shweta Tripathi) and Dimpy. That is where the cliffhanger left fans for two years.

What happened in Mirzapur season 2

Season 2 was built around one question: could Guddu and Golu take down the Tripathis? It answered with a slow, bloody climb back to power.

Guddu and Golu recover away from Mirzapur and start rebuilding with new allies, including Lala’s network and Rati Shankar’s son Sharad Shukla (Anjum Sharma). Golu, once a shy student, turns into a hardened fighter.

On the Tripathi side, Munna grows closer to political power through his marriage to Madhuri Yadav (Isha Talwar), the widowed daughter of the Chief Minister. Inside the house, Beena Tripathi (Rasika Dugal) takes her own revenge on the family.

The finale ends at a cremation ground. Guddu shoots Munna dead, Kaleen Bhaiya is injured and taken away by Sharad, and Guddu claims the throne of Mirzapur. A post-credits scene reveals that Shatrughan, presumed dead, is alive and has been posing as his twin.

Why Mirzapur season 2 divided fans

Season 2 was one of the most awaited Indian web series of its time, but reactions were mixed. Many viewers felt the first half moved too slowly and that the revenge story took too long to pay off. Others praised Shweta Tripathi’s turn as Golu and Divyenndu’s Munna, who got more layers this time. The finale, though, settled the debate for most fans, since it delivered the face-off the whole season had been building towards.

Mirzapur season 3: Guddu on the throne

Season 3 arrived on Prime Video on 5 July 2024. With Munna gone, the fight is between Guddu, who now runs Mirzapur, and a recovering Kaleen Bhaiya, backed by Sharad Shukla. Madhuri Yadav, now Chief Minister, plays her own game to clean up crime in the state.

The season ends with a meeting of the region’s dons where Sharad is killed and Kaleen Bhaiya returns to power, while Golu helps Guddu get out of prison. A post-credits scene sets up Beena’s next chapter. Divyenndu did not return as Munna in the series.

Mirzapur: The Movie and season 4 updates

The franchise moved to the big screen with Mirzapur: The Movie, directed by Gurmmeet Singh and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. It opened in theatres on 4 September 2026 with an A certificate.

Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu return as Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu and Munna. As per Esquire India, the film is a standalone chapter set during season 1, between episodes 6 and 7, so it works as a prequel within the timeline rather than a follow-up to season 3. Its runtime is listed at 197 minutes.
