What is Ghajini about?
Sanjay Singhania is a wealthy businessman who falls for Kalpana Shetty, a cheerful, struggling model. She does not know who he really is, because he introduces himself as Sachin Chauhan, an ordinary man.
Kalpana is murdered by Ghajini Dharmatma (Pradeep Rawat), and Sanjay is left with anterograde amnesia. He cannot form new memories for more than a few minutes. To find and punish Ghajini, he tattoos clues on his body and takes instant photos to remind himself what he is doing each day.
The film is a Hindi remake of Murugadoss’s own Tamil film Ghajini (2005), which was itself inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Memento (2000).

A letter to Sanjay Singhania
Dear Sanjay,
You had everything: money, a company, a name people knew. Yet when you met Kalpana, you chose to be Sachin, a man with no big title. You wanted to be loved for who you were, not for what you owned. That quiet choice said more about you than any boardroom speech.
Your love for Kalpana was gentle and patient. You watched her help strangers and fell for her a little more each time. When she was taken from you, you lost not just her but your own memory. Still, you did not give up. Every tattoo and every photograph was a promise you kept to her, even when you could not remember making it.
Most people need memory to stay loyal. You stayed loyal without it. We hope that, somewhere, you have found peace and the chance to love again.

A letter to Kalpana
Dear Kalpana,
You were the heart of this film. You laughed loudly, talked too much and made friends everywhere you went. You took the time to help people with disabilities when others walked past. You made kindness look easy.
You fell for Sachin without asking about his bank balance. When you thought he was in trouble, you sold the car you had just bought to help him. That is the kind of selflessness most of us only talk about.
Your story ends too soon, but it is the reason Sanjay keeps fighting. Thank you for showing us that goodness can be loud, funny and brave all at once. Keep shining, wherever you are.
Why Ghajini still matters
Ghajini changed Bollywood’s box office. It was the first Hindi film to open in double digits, with a reported ₹10.2 crore on day one, and the first to cross ₹100 crore net in India. That record gave rise to the “100 crore club” that every big release is now measured against.
It was also the highest-grossing Indian film of its time, until Aamir Khan’s own 3 Idiots (2009) overtook it. It also proved that a dark revenge thriller with a memory-loss twist could work as a mass Christmas release.
The film did well at awards too. Asin won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, and Peter Hein won Best Action. Murugadoss won Best Director at the Producers Guild Film Awards.
Is there a Ghajini 2?
Not officially. In January 2025, at the trailer launch of Thandel, producer Allu Aravind told Aamir Khan he wanted to make a ₹1,000 crore film with him, “maybe Ghajini 2”, as IANS reported. Aamir only said that a lot was going around online about the sequel.
Reports have also said the sequel could be made in Hindi and Tamil at the same time, with Suriya in the Tamil version and Aamir in Hindi. None of this has been confirmed with a script, cast or date. For more film throwbacks, see our Bollywood and movies sections.
