Bhai Dooj 2026 date and tilak muhurat

Bhai Dooj is observed on Shukla Paksha Dwitiya of the Kartik month, two days after the new moon of Diwali. In 2026, the tithi spans parts of two days, but the festival is marked on 11 November because the afternoon (aparahna) period, which is preferred for the tilak, falls within Dwitiya on that day.

Detail Timing (2026)
Bhai Dooj date Wednesday, 11 November 2026
Dwitiya tithi begins 2:00 pm, 10 November 2026
Dwitiya tithi ends 3:53 pm, 11 November 2026
Tilak muhurat, New Delhi (Drik Panchang) 1:10 pm to 3:20 pm

Muhurat timings shift slightly from city to city because they depend on local sunrise and sunset. If you live outside these cities, check a panchang for your own location, or ask your family priest. The tithi start and end times are the same across India, since they are given in IST.

Diwali 2026 calendar: where Bhai Dooj fits

Bhai Dooj closes the Diwali festival week. Here are the main dates for 2026, as listed by Prokerala for Ujjain (IST).

  • Dhanteras: Friday, 6 November 2026
  • Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali): Sunday, 8 November 2026
  • Govardhan Puja: Tuesday, 10 November 2026
  • Bhai Dooj: Wednesday, 11 November 2026

Since Bhai Dooj falls on a Wednesday this year, many working siblings may need to plan the ritual around office hours. The muhurat runs through the early afternoon, so a long lunch break or a half day is usually enough.

What is Bhai Dooj and why is it celebrated?

Bhai Dooj is a festival for brothers and sisters. Sisters apply a tilak on their brothers’ foreheads and pray for their long life, and brothers give gifts in return and promise to support them. The day is also called Yama Dwitiya.

The best-known story behind it is about Yama, the god of death, visiting his sister Yamuna on this day. She welcomed him with a meal and a tilak, and he blessed her in return. Because of this, a bath in the Yamuna on Bhai Dooj is considered auspicious.

Another story links the day to Lord Krishna. After defeating the demon Narakasura, Krishna is said to have visited his sister Subhadra, who welcomed him with sweets and flowers and put a tilak on his forehead.

Bhai Dooj puja vidhi: rituals step by step

Customs differ by family and region, but most households follow a pattern close to this.

  1. Prepare the thali. Keep roli or kumkum, rice grains (akshat), a diya, sweets, a dry coconut (gola) in some homes, flowers and a small glass of water.
  2. Bathe and dress. Both siblings bathe and wear fresh or new clothes. Many sisters keep a fast until the tilak is done.
  3. Seat the brother. The brother sits on a low stool or a clean mat. In some homes he covers his head with a handkerchief or cloth.
  4. Apply the tilak. Within the muhurat, the sister applies roli and rice grains on his forehead.
  5. Perform aarti. She does aarti with the lit diya and prays for his long life and good health.
  6. Offer sweets and a meal. She feeds him sweets, and in many homes cooks his favourite food for lunch.
  7. Exchange gifts. The brother touches her feet if she is elder, or blesses her if she is younger, and gives a gift or cash.

If a brother lives in another city, many families do the tilak on a video call and send the gift by courier or online payment. In Maharashtra and Haryana, women without brothers sometimes worship the Moon in place of a brother.

Bhai Dooj regional names: Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta and more

The festival is marked across India and Nepal under different names, with small changes in ritual.

Name Where it is used
Bhai Dooj North India
Bhaiya Dooj Awadh and Purvanchal in Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar
Bhau Beej, Bhav Bij, Bhai Beej Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and Konkani communities in Karnataka
Bhai Phonta West Bengal, Tripura and Bangladesh
Bhai Jiuntia Western Odisha
Bhardutiya Maithil communities in Bihar and Nepal
Bhatru Dwitiya, Bhagini Hastha Bhojanamu Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
Bhai Tika, Bhai Tihar Nepal
Yama Dwitiya South India and in religious texts

Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Goa

In Marathi and Konkani homes, Bhau Beej comes at the end of the Diwali week. The sister does aarti and applies a tilak, and the meal often features home-made Diwali faral sweets. In homes where the brother lives far away, some sisters perform aarti to the Moon instead.

Bhai Phonta in Bengal

Bhai Phonta is held two days after Kali Puja. Sisters put a phonta, a small mark usually made with sandalwood paste, on their brother’s forehead and recite a short traditional rhyme asking for protection from Yama. The day ends with a large lunch with several dishes and sweets.

Bhai Tika in Nepal

In Nepal, Bhai Tika is the fifth and last day of Tihar and one of the country’s most important festivals after Dashain. Sisters apply a vertical seven-colour tika, called saptarangi tika, and give garlands made of makhamali (globe amaranth) flowers. Newar families call the day Kija Puja.

Bhai Dooj 2026 gift ideas for brothers and sisters

A gift on Bhai Dooj does not need to be expensive. What matters most is that it suits the person. Here are practical ideas that work for different ages and budgets.

For sisters

  • Jewellery: silver earrings, a simple chain or a bracelet. Silver is often more affordable than gold for a yearly gift.
  • Skincare or fragrance sets: pick a brand she already uses to avoid guesswork.
  • Experiences: a spa voucher, a cooking class or tickets to a show she wants to see.
  • Gadgets: wireless earbuds, a smartwatch or a Kindle for a reader.
  • Money with a plan: a small SIP started in her name or a recurring deposit, if you both prefer something long term.

For brothers

  • Grooming kits: a beard trimmer or a good shaving set.
  • Wallets and belts: leather accessories are a common, practical choice.
  • Eyewear: sunglasses are useful for driving and travel. Indian labels such as Rawbare make frames that can be a lasting gift.
  • Fitness gear: a gym bag, running shoes or a yoga mat.
  • Books or subscriptions: a book by an author he likes, or a streaming or music subscription.

For siblings of any age

  • A printed photo album of family pictures from childhood.
  • A box of home-made sweets or dry fruits.
  • Movie tickets for a festive release. Our list of new movies in theatres in October and November 2026 can help you pick one, and our guide to the Ramayana Part 1 release date and cast covers one of the season’s biggest films.

Bhai Dooj food: what is usually cooked

The meal changes by region. In North India, families often make puri, chole, kheer and halwa. In Maharashtra, the leftover Diwali faral such as karanji, chakli and ladoo is shared. In Bengal, the Bhai Phonta lunch is usually a large spread that ends with mishti like rasgulla and sandesh.

A simple tip: cook the main dishes in the morning so that the tilak can be done on time within the afternoon muhurat, with the meal served right after.
