2. Memento (2000)
The film that made Hollywood notice him. Guy Pearce plays a man with short-term memory loss trying to find his wife’s killer, and the story is told partly in reverse. Memento is streaming on Lionsgate Play in India.
3. Insomnia (2002)
A remake of a Norwegian film, starring Al Pacino as a detective investigating a murder in Alaska, where the sun never sets in summer. Robin Williams plays the suspect. It was Nolan’s first studio film.
4. Batman Begins (2005)
Nolan rebooted Batman with Christian Bale in a grounded, realistic style. The film tells Bruce Wayne’s origin story and set the template for many superhero films that followed.
5. The Prestige (2006)
Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale play rival magicians in Victorian London. It is one of his most rewatched films because of its twists. The Prestige is streaming on Netflix in India.
6. The Dark Knight (2008)
Many fans still call this his best. Heath Ledger’s Joker won him a posthumous Oscar. The Dark Knight is available on Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar in India.
7. Inception (2010)
Leonardo DiCaprio leads a team that enters people’s dreams to plant an idea. The spinning top ending is still debated. Inception streams on Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar in India.
8. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
The final part of the Batman trilogy, with Tom Hardy as Bane and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. It was Nolan’s last film to cross $1 billion worldwide until The Odyssey.

9. Interstellar (2014)
Matthew McConaughey plays a pilot who leaves Earth to find a new home for humanity. Hans Zimmer’s organ-heavy score is one of the most recognised film scores of the last decade. It streams on Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar.
10. Dunkirk (2017)
A Second World War film about the evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk in 1940. It tells the story from land, sea and air across three timelines, with very little dialogue.
11. Tenet (2020)
John David Washington plays an agent dealing with objects that move backwards in time. It released during the pandemic and is his most complex film. Tenet is streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in India.
12. Oppenheimer (2023)
Cillian Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the atomic bomb. The film won Best Picture at the Oscars and gave Nolan his first Best Director win. Oppenheimer is streaming on JioHotstar in India.
13. The Odyssey (2026)
Nolan’s version of Homer’s epic poem stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron. It released on 17 July 2026 and was the first feature shot entirely on IMAX film cameras.
It is his biggest hit so far. As of 11 September 2026, it had grossed $1.657 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. In India, Business Today reported it was close to ₹200 crore gross within 20 days. It was also the first Nolan film to have an official premiere in India, held in Mumbai. The Odyssey arrives on digital platforms on 17 November 2026.
Familiar faces in Nolan’s films
Nolan likes to work with the same people. His wife, Emma Thomas, has produced his films for years, and they run the production company Syncopy together. Hans Zimmer scored several of his films, including the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk.
On screen, Christian Bale led four of his films, while Michael Caine appeared in many, from Batman Begins to Tenet. Cillian Murphy played supporting roles in the Batman films, Inception and Dunkirk before he finally got the lead in Oppenheimer and won the Oscar for Best Actor.
Nolan is also known for preferring film over digital and for shooting on IMAX cameras, something he began with The Dark Knight. The Odyssey took this furthest, with over 2 million feet of IMAX 70mm film used.
Where to start if you are new to Nolan
If you are new to his work, start with The Prestige or Inception. Both are easy to follow on a first watch and show his love for twists. Move to The Dark Knight and Interstellar next, then try Memento and Tenet once you are used to his style of storytelling.
