1. Padosan (1968)

Sunil Dutt plays Bhola, a simple man who falls for his neighbour Bindu (Saira Banu). Since she loves music, he takes help from his friend Guru (Kishore Kumar), who sings while Bhola lip-syncs. Mehmood plays Bindu’s music teacher and Bhola’s rival.

The song “Ek Chatur Naar” is still one of the funniest musical scenes in Hindi cinema.

2. Satte Pe Satta (1982)

Amitabh Bachchan plays Ravi, the eldest of seven rowdy brothers whose names follow the days of the week. Things change when he marries Indu (Hema Malini), who sets out to reform the household.

The film is inspired by the Hollywood musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and Amitabh also plays a double role in the second half. It is free with ads on JioHotstar.

3. Bawarchi (1972)

Rajesh Khanna plays Raghu, a cook who joins a quarrelling joint family and slowly brings everyone together. Jaya Bhaduri plays the youngest member of the family.

It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and is a remake of Tapan Sinha’s Bengali film Galpa Holeo Satyi. It is gentle, warm and very funny.

4. Gol Maal (1979)

Amol Palekar plays Ramprasad, who lies in a job interview to impress his strict boss Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt). To cover his tracks, he invents a twin brother, Lakshmanprasad, with a moustache problem.

Utpal Dutt won the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian for this role. Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal series borrowed only the name. Stream it on Prime Video.

5. Bombay to Goa (1972)

Aruna Irani plays a young woman who witnesses a murder and escapes on a bus from Bombay to Goa, with the killers following. Amitabh Bachchan plays a fellow passenger who protects her, in one of his early roles.

Produced by Mehmood, it is full of oddball passengers and comic songs. It streams on Prime Video and JioHotstar.

6. Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986)

Anil Kapoor plays Charandas, a wrestler who has sworn to stay single, until he falls for Chameli (Amrita Singh). Their families, divided by caste pride, go to war over the match.

Basu Chatterjee’s comedy has fine supporting turns from Pankaj Kapur and Om Prakash. It is not streaming in India at the moment.

7. Chashme Buddoor (1981)

Sai Paranjpye’s film follows three Delhi University roommates, played by Farooq Shaikh, Rakesh Bedi and Ravi Baswani, who all chase the same girl, Neha (Deepti Naval).

The “Chamko” washing powder sales scene is a cult favourite. David Dhawan remade it in 2013, but the original is the one to watch. It is on Prime Video and JioHotstar.

8. Chachi 420 (1997)

Kamal Haasan directed and starred in this Hindi version of his Tamil hit Avvai Shanmughi, itself inspired by Mrs. Doubtfire. He plays a divorced father who disguises himself as an elderly woman to work as a nanny in his ex-wife’s home and stay close to his daughter.

Tabu, Amrish Puri, Om Puri and Paresh Rawal round out the cast. It is not streaming in India right now.

9. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)

The three Ganguly brothers, Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Anoop Kumar, play brothers who run a garage. The eldest distrusts women, and the trouble starts when Kishore’s character falls for Madhubala’s.

The songs, including “Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si”, keep it fresh. It streams on Prime Video and ShemarooMe.

10. Half Ticket (1962)

Kishore Kumar plays a grown man who dresses up as a child to buy a half-price train ticket, and gets caught up with smugglers and Madhubala on the journey. Pran plays the villain.

It is pure silliness, held together by Kishore’s energy. It streams on Prime Video and ShemarooMe.

11. Angoor (1982)

Gulzar’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors stars Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma, each in a double role as two pairs of twins separated at birth. When both pairs land in the same town, chaos follows.

It is often called one of the best-written comedies in Hindi. Stream it on Prime Video.

12. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)

Kundan Shah’s satire follows two photographers, played by Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani, who stumble on a murder linked to corrupt builders and officials. The climax, set during a stage play of the Mahabharata, is legendary.
