For many years now, Indian-origin across the world have been making their existence felt by enriching in a broad range of career spectrums. From the UK, the US to Africa and Argentina, there is no dearth of success stories of global Indians.

From science to arts, business to literature, Their contributions have brought glory to the whole nation and has motivated the youth to hustle for their altruistic ambitions.

Prabasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated once in every two years to exhibit gratitude to the overseas Indian community for their tribute towards the growth of the country. Commemorating PBD or Non-Indian Residents (NRI) day also improves rendezvous of the NRIs with the govt of India.

As on the very day of 9 January 1915, Mahatma Gandhi retreated from South Africa to India, the day is the most relevant for the govts to celebrate the NRIs. This year, the theme of NRI Day 2021 has been put as “Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat”.

So to mark the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2021 or the NRI Day 2021, we at TSA present you with a list of 6 incredibly talented Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who have delivered us with numerous more explanations to be proud of –

1.Swaraj Paul

Swaraj Paul, a United Kingdom-based business magnate and philanthropist. Paul was born in Punjab in 1931 after completing a degree in the Punjab University, he did his Masters from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.

He later retreated to India and enrolled Apeejay Group, established by his father and went back to the United Kingdom in 1966 and dwelled there permanently.

He renamed the organization Apeejay to Caparo which came to be one of the UK’s prominent inventors of spiral welded pipes and welded steel tubes. Now, the Caparo organization is one of the wealthiest family-owned corporations in the United Kingdom.

He was knighted by Queen in 1978. Presently, he reclines in the House of Lords as a crossbencher with the designation Baron Paul, of Marylebone, in the city of Manchester.

2.Lakshmi Mittal

This business magnate is the chairman and CEO of ArcelorMittal, the world’s biggest steel producing company. Hailing from Sadulpur, Rajasthan, Mittal completed his graduation in B.com from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata.

He was the wealthiest man of Asian descent in the United Kingdom in the year 2007 and was tagged as the sixth wealthiest person in the world by Forbes in 2011. He also holds the title of 47th “most powerful person” in the Forbes list of 2012 and one of the “100 most influential persons in the world” by TIME in 2007.

He has a 34 per cent share in Queens Park Rangers F.C. and has established the Mittal Champions Trust with $9 million to assist 10 reasonable Indian athletes

 

3.Salman Rushdie

Born in the city of Mumbai, this 67-year-old Kashmiri Indian author is best remembered for his tribute to English Literature. His second novel, Midnight’s Children, earned the Booker Prize in 1981. He also earned the ‘Booker of Bookers’ prize in 1993 for the similar novel.

In 2008, The Times classified him as the 13th on its list of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945.
He commenced his career as a copywriter with the advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather. He is also recognized for the controversy due to his book Satanic Verses. He has penned eleven novels so far and composed several short stories.

His books have been deciphered in over 40 languages. He was nominated as the Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France in January 1999 and was also knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his assistance to literature. More than one explanation to be proud of this incredible scholar, right?

4. Indra Nooyi

She is the Chairperson and CEO of PepsiCo, the second-biggest food and beverage corporation in the world by net revenue. This Chennai hailed girl has been named in the list of “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” periodically.

Despite this, Nooyi is still battling to “have it all” and sustain work and personal life equilibrium.

As per Bussiness Week, the company’s annual incomes have climbed to 72 per cent and net profit has made twice as much since she became CFO in 2000. She was also involved in the Wall Street Journal’s list of 50 women to watch in the year 2007 and 2008.

5.Satya Nadella

This existing CEO of Microsoft was born in Hyderabad and initially worked with Sun Microsystems as a member of its technology staff before associating with Microsoft in 1992.

He was Executive Vice President of Cloud & Enterprise Group and President of Server & Tools at Microsoft Corporation before serving as the CEO in February this year. He played a crucial role in the changeover to the cloud infrastructure and services business which seized the market. He has also been a key person in taking numerous internal judgments at Microsoft.

 

6.Sundar Pichai

Sundar Pichai is the CEO of Google who was titled a Palmer Scholar and Siebel Scholar when he was pursuing his MBA from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He was initially elected as the Product Chief but later endorsed as the CEO of the company by Google.

Pichai, a Chennai born, completed his mechanical engineering from IIT Kharagpur. When he first joined Google in 2004, he led the creative efforts and product management for a suite of Google Chrome, Chrome OS, Google Drive and more. He was named in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020.
