1. Raging Bull (1980)

Martin Scorsese’s black-and-white film follows middleweight champion Jake LaMotta, played by Robert De Niro, whose jealousy and rage destroy his marriage and career. De Niro won the Oscar for Best Actor, and Thelma Schoonmaker won for editing.

The fight scenes are short, brutal and cut in a way that changed how sport is filmed. It is not an easy watch, but it is the benchmark. Streams on Prime Video.

2. Rocky (1976)

Sylvester Stallone wrote and starred in this story of a Philadelphia club fighter who gets a title shot against Apollo Creed. It won the Oscar for Best Picture and started a franchise that is still running through the Creed films.

3. Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Clint Eastwood directed and starred as a gruff trainer who takes on a determined waitress turned fighter, played by Hilary Swank. Morgan Freeman plays his old friend and gym caretaker.

The film won four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Swank and Best Supporting Actor for Freeman. The final act is heartbreaking. Streams on Prime Video.

4. Cinderella Man (2005)

Ron Howard’s film tells the true story of James J. Braddock, played by Russell Crowe, a heavyweight who makes a comeback during the Great Depression to feed his family. Renee Zellweger plays his wife and Paul Giamatti his manager.

It is an old-fashioned underdog film in the best sense. JustWatch shows it is not streaming in India right now.

5. The Fighter (2010)

David O. Russell’s film follows real-life boxer Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and his half-brother and trainer Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), a former fighter battling addiction. Bale and Melissa Leo, who plays their mother, both won Oscars.

The focus is on a loud, loving and difficult family more than the ring. That is what makes it stand out.

6. The Hurricane (1999)

Denzel Washington plays Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a middleweight contender wrongly convicted of a triple murder, in this film by Norman Jewison. Washington won the Golden Globe for Best Actor for the role.

Most of the story is about Carter’s fight for freedom from prison, with help from a teenager who reads his book. It works as both a sports film and a courtroom drama.

7. Creed (2015)

Ryan Coogler revived the Rocky series with Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed, who convinces an ageing Rocky to train him. Stallone won a Golden Globe and earned an Oscar nomination for playing Rocky again.

It respects the old films while standing on its own. In India it is available to rent on Prime Video and Apple TV.

8. Before the Fall (2004)

Also known by its German title Napola, Dennis Gansel’s film follows a working-class teenage boxer, played by Max Riemelt, who wins a place at an elite Nazi school in 1942. His friendship with a classmate makes him question what he is being trained for.

Boxing is the hook, but the film is really about conscience. It is the least known film on this list and worth seeking out.

9. Southpaw (2015)

Antoine Fuqua directed Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy Hope, a light heavyweight champion who loses everything after a personal tragedy and has to rebuild with a new trainer, played by Forest Whitaker.

Gyllenhaal’s physical transformation got much attention. In India it is available to rent on Apple TV.

10. Ali (2001)

Michael Mann’s biopic stars Will Smith as Muhammad Ali, covering the years from his first title win in 1964 to the Rumble in the Jungle against George Foreman in 1974. Smith and Jon Voight, who plays broadcaster Howard Cosell, both got Oscar nominations.

It covers Ali’s refusal of the Vietnam draft and his conversion to Islam as much as his fights. Available via the Lionsgate Play channel on Prime Video.

Creed III (2023)

Michael B. Jordan made his directing debut with the third Creed film, in which Adonis faces a childhood friend just out of prison, played by Jonathan Majors. It is the first film in the series without Stallone as Rocky. Streams on Prime Video.

Sarpatta Parambarai (2021)
