Weekends get very crowded. The market has its own station, Sarojini Nagar, on the Delhi Metro Pink Line. Janpath is better for junk jewellery and handicrafts. Haggling is expected at both.

2. Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar, Jaipur

Johari Bazaar is the place for silver and junk jewellery. Bapu Bazaar is known for mojris (traditional footwear), ethnic clothes, lac bangles, bedsheets, puppets and lamps.

3. Colaba Causeway and Fashion Street, Mumbai

Colaba Causeway sells clothes, bags, jewellery and souvenirs on a long stretch of pavement stalls. Fashion Street is a row of stalls known for cheap clothes in the latest styles. Both are ideal if you shop mostly for fashion.

4. Arpora Saturday Night Market, Goa

FC Road is a budget market popular with students. Watches, bags, dresses, shoes and accessories sell here at low prices.

Hazratganj is the place to buy Chikankari fabrics and clothes, the hand embroidery Lucknow is famous for. Designers also source from here. Finish the trip with kebabs, tikkas and curries in the area.

7. Commercial Street, Bengaluru

Cleaner and better organised than most street markets, Commercial Street sells trendy, slightly more upmarket items at fair prices. It is good for clothes, footwear and accessories.

8. Laad Bazaar and Begum Bazaar, Hyderabad

Laad Bazaar sits on one of the four main roads leading out from Charminar and is about a kilometre long. It is famous for lac bangles studded with stones, and also sells saris, wedding items, pearls, silverware, bidriware and perfumes. It has been trading since the Qutb Shahi period. Begum Bazaar, in the Old City, is a major wholesale market for household goods, brass and copper ware and spices.

9. Mall Road, Mussoorie

This hill town market in Uttarakhand mixes boutiques with street vendors. Look for woollens, shawls and antiques. Bargaining is a good idea, especially in the peak tourist season.

10. Mall Road, Shimla

About a kilometre long, Mall Road runs one level below the Ridge and was built during British rule. Cars are not allowed on it, except emergency vehicles, so it is a pleasant walk. The Himachal emporium here sells local handicrafts, woollens, pottery and jewellery, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants.

11. Jew Town, Kochi

Jew Town in Mattancherry, Old Kochi, is known as a haven for antique lovers. Shops sell antiques, curios, handicrafts, spices and jewellery. The Paradesi Synagogue here dates to 1568. Note that the old Jewish community has almost disappeared, with only five Jews reported in Fort Kochi in 2016, so most shops today are run by others. The synagogue is closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

12. Police Bazaar, Shillong

The busiest market in Shillong sells local handicrafts, silk and cotton clothes, designer wear, shoes and bags. Many prices are fixed, but polite bargaining can still work. Try the local food stalls.

13. Ima Keithel, Imphal

Ima Keithel, or “Mothers’ Market”, is run entirely by women. Around 5,000 to 6,000 women vendors work here on any given day, selling vegetables, fruit, fish, spices, textiles and utensils. The Phouoibi Ima Keithel section sells handloom goods, including traditional Meitei clothing. The market dates to the 16th century and moved into the Khwairamband Bazaar complex in 2010. Buying here directly supports the women who run it.

14. Serenity Beach Bazaar, Puducherry

An open-air market shaded by palm trees near Serenity Beach. It sells Auroville products, local crafts, souvenirs, clothes and jewellery. Pair it with seafood and an evening by the sea.

15. Tibet Walk, Ooty

Tibet Walk is known for its chocolate shops, which give it a Willy Wonka feel. You will also find woollen clothes, quilts, blankets, shoes and accessories, useful for the cold hill evenings.
