A pan-India film is a big-budget commercial film released at the same time in several Indian languages, usually Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi, so it can reach the whole country in one go. The trend took off with S. S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali films and now shapes how most big Indian films are planned.
Ten years ago, a Telugu or Kannada film reached Hindi audiences mostly through TV dubs or late theatrical releases. Today, a film like Pushpa 2 or Kantara: Chapter 1 opens the same day in five languages, with matching trailers and promotions. Here is how that change happened, with box office numbers to show why the industry took it seriously.
What does pan-India film mean?
The term describes a mainstream film that is marketed and released across language markets instead of one home state. The original is shot in one language, and dubbed versions release alongside it. The aim is a national audience, and often overseas markets too.

The idea is not entirely new. According to The Times of India, as cited on Wikipedia, the 1959 Kannada film Mahishasura Mardini was dubbed and released in seven other languages. What changed after 2015 was the scale, the budgets and the planned simultaneous release.
How Baahubali started the trend
Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) are widely credited with creating the modern pan-India model. Baahubali 2 released on April 28, 2017, in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam.
It grossed an estimated ₹1,810 crore worldwide, including about ₹1,430 crore in India. It was the first Indian film to gross over ₹1,000 crore, and it also became the highest-grossing film in Hindi, despite being a dubbed Telugu film. That single fact changed how producers looked at the Hindi market.
The films that proved it was not a one-off
After Baahubali, a string of South Indian films crossed language lines at the box office. Here are the worldwide gross figures as listed on Wikipedia’s list of highest-grossing Indian films, which compiles trade reports. Where sources differ, the range is shown.
| Film | Year | Original language | Worldwide gross |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baahubali 2: The Conclusion | 2017 | Telugu | about ₹1,810 crore |
| KGF: Chapter 2 | 2022 | Kannada | ₹1,200 crore to ₹1,250 crore |
| RRR | 2022 | Telugu | ₹1,300 crore to ₹1,387 crore |
| Kalki 2898 AD | 2024 | Telugu | ₹1,042 crore to ₹1,100 crore |
| Pushpa 2: The Rule | 2024 | Telugu | ₹1,642 crore to ₹1,800 crore |
| Kantara: Chapter 1 | 2025 | Kannada | about ₹850 crore |

Pushpa 2: the Hindi version as a hit on its own
Pushpa 2: The Rule released on December 5, 2024, in Telugu with Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam versions. The Hindi version opened with ₹72 crore net in India on day one, and crossed ₹797 crore in four weeks.
Those numbers mean the dubbed Hindi version did bigger business than most original Hindi films. Distributors now treat the Hindi belt as a primary market for big Telugu films, not an add-on.
Kantara: Chapter 1 and the Kannada story
Kannada cinema has two of the clearest examples. Prashanth Neel’s KGF: Chapter 1 (2018) released in five languages, and KGF: Chapter 2 built on that in 2022. Then Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1 opened on October 2, 2025, in Kannada with Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam versions.
Its Hindi version earned about ₹20 crore on day one. The film grossed about ₹850 crore worldwide and became the first film to gross over ₹250 crore in Karnataka alone.
Why pan-India films work
- Simultaneous release: Every language opens the same day, so the buzz and the reviews reach every state at once.
- Festival dates: Big films lock Sankranti, Dussehra, Diwali or Christmas, when theatres across states are full.
- Stories that travel: Mythology, folklore, action and family drama need little local context.
- Star directors: Names like Rajamouli, Prashanth Neel and Sukumar now pull audiences on their own.
- OTT dubs: Streaming platforms release dubbed versions together, which grows each star’s audience for the next film.
Bollywood has started using the same playbook
The flow is no longer one way. Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh, released on March 19, 2026, in Hindi along with Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada versions. It grossed over ₹1,852 crore worldwide and is now the second-highest-grossing Indian film.
Ramayana: Part 1, with Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash, opens on November 6, 2026. It is the next big test of a film built for every market from day one. You can track its release in our Movies section and star news in Celebs.
The criticism
Not everyone likes the label. Prabhas has said the industry should simply make Indian films. Actor Siddharth has called the term disrespectful because it is used mainly for non-Hindi films. Kamal Haasan has said the idea always existed and only the word is new.
Critics have also pointed out that many of these hits are violent action films built around one male hero, with thin roles for women. That debate is likely to continue as budgets grow.
