9 songs we love from Bollywood horror films
1. Aapke Pyaar Mein (Raaz, 2002)
Alka Yagnik sings this Nadeem-Shravan melody in Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz, the film that brought big-budget horror back to Bollywood. It is picturised on Malini Sharma and Dino Morea. The whole Raaz album was a chartbuster, but this song is the one that still sets the mood for a spooky evening.
2. Tum Ho Mera Pyaar (Haunted 3D, 2011)
From Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted 3D, this song starts soft and slow before it builds to a big, catchy chorus that stays in your head. It is a love song at heart, which makes the film’s ghost story land harder.
3. Uska Hi Banana (1920: Evil Returns, 2012)
Arijit Singh sings this Chirantan Bhatt composition, and it remains one of the most underrated tracks of his early career. It sounds gentle at first, but there is something sad and eerie running underneath. Easily the best thing to come out of the film.
4. Mera Saaya Saath Hoga (Mera Saaya, 1966)
Lata Mangeshkar sings Madan Mohan’s haunting tune in Raj Khosla’s mystery thriller starring Sunil Dutt and Sadhana. The song tells a husband that his wife’s shadow will stay with him even after she is gone. Nearly 60 years later, it still gives listeners chills.
5. Deewana Kar Raha Hai (Raaz 3, 2012)
Raaz 3, with Emraan Hashmi, Bipasha Basu and Esha Gupta, got mixed reviews, but this song was a hit. The whispered chorus is what makes it stand out. It is moody, slow and best heard with headphones.
6. Kaise Bataaoon (3G, 2013)
KK and Sonal Chauhan, who also starred in the film with Neil Nitin Mukesh, sing this Mithoon love song. Few people remember 3G today, but this track has outlived it. Listening now is also a reminder of how much KK’s voice is missed after his death in 2022.
7. Soona Soona Lamha Lamha (Krishna Cottage, 2004)

9. Aaj Ki Raat (Stree 2, 2024)
Sachin-Jigar’s Aaj Ki Raat, sung by Madhubanti Bagchi and Divya Kumar and picturised on Tamannaah Bhatia, became one of the biggest songs of 2024. Stree 2 itself was a blockbuster and is streaming on Prime Video in India. The song proves horror-comedy music can top the charts too.
Why horror songs work so well in Bollywood
Hindi horror has always leaned on music more than Hollywood horror does. A slow, sad melody tells the audience something is wrong long before the ghost appears. That is why songs like Mera Saaya Saath Hoga and Ami Je Tomar are remembered long after the films’ scares have faded.
Two camps did most of this work. The Bhatt camp built Raaz, Haunted 3D, 1920: Evil Returns and Raaz 3 around music-led albums, often with romantic songs that turned sad by the end. More recently, Maddock Films has used chartbuster songs in its horror-comedy series, which includes Stree, Bhediya, Munjya and Stree 2. Both approaches show that in Hindi cinema, a horror film without a strong album is rare.
