8 rewatchable Bollywood movies of the 90s
1. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
Aditya Chopra’s debut with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol is the film most of us can recite scene by scene. Raj and Simran’s love story, from the Europe trip to the final scenes, has been copied many times but never bettered.
DDLJ has played at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir since its release on 20 October 1995. It overtook Sholay as the longest-running film in Indian cinema in 2001, crossed 1,000 weeks in December 2014, and was still showing daily in 2026. It was the top grosser of 1995.
Where to watch: Netflix.
2. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
Rajkumar Santoshi’s comedy brought Aamir Khan and Salman Khan together as Amar and Prem, two jobless dreamers chasing the same rich heiress. Paresh Rawal’s double role as Ram Gopal and Shyam Gopal Bajaj and Shakti Kapoor’s Crime Master Gogo are still meme favourites.
The surprising part: it flopped on release, earning about Rs 8.65 crore worldwide. It became a cult classic on TV and video over the years. A 4K restored version was re-released in theatres on 25 April 2025, 31 years after it first came out.
Where to watch: Prime Video, and free with ads on Amazon MX Player.
3. Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994)
Sooraj Barjatya’s family film with Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit is a warm family entertainer packed with songs. Prem and Nisha’s romance plays out inside a big, happy joint family.
It was the biggest hit of the 90s, ahead even of DDLJ, and it is still a favourite at weddings and family gatherings. Renuka Shahane, Mohnish Behl, Anupam Kher and Reema Lagoo complete the family.
Where to watch: Prime Video, ZEE5 and JioHotstar.
4. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romance stars Aishwarya Rai as Nandini, Salman Khan as Sameer and Ajay Devgn as Vanraj. Nandini falls for Sameer, but her family marries her to Vanraj, and the film follows what happens to all three.
It has the colour, music and big emotions that became Bhansali’s trademark. Ajay Devgn’s quiet performance gives the film its heart.
Where to watch: Netflix.

5. Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)
Yash Chopra’s musical romance is set in a dance troupe. Shah Rukh Khan plays Rahul, Madhuri Dixit plays Pooja and Karisma Kapoor plays Nisha, with Akshay Kumar as Ajay.
The dance sequences and songs are the reason people keep coming back, and the film still feels fresh.
Where to watch: Netflix.
6. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992)
Mansoor Khan’s college sports drama has Aamir Khan as Sanju, a careless young man who grows up through a fierce rivalry between schools. Ayesha Jhulka, Pooja Bedi and Deepak Tijori are part of the cast, and a young Imran Khan plays young Sanju.
Rivalry, first love and growing up, all set to great songs, make this an easy rewatch. Sadly, it is not on any streaming platform in India right now.
7. Rangeela (1995)
Ram Gopal Varma’s musical stars Urmila Matondkar as Mili, a girl who dreams of becoming a film star. Aamir Khan plays Munna, her street-smart friend, and Jackie Shroff plays Raj Kamal, the star who gives her a break.
The music, Urmila’s dancing and Aamir’s Munna keep it fresh even three decades later.
Where to watch: Prime Video, and free with ads on JioHotstar and MX Player.
8. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
Karan Johar’s first film as director brought back the DDLJ pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, with Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan. Shah Rukh plays Rahul and Kajol plays Anjali, two college friends whose story picks up again years later.
The college scenes, shot at the University of Mauritius, and the summer camp songs made it a favourite for anyone who grew up in the late 90s.
Where to watch: Netflix and Prime Video.
Why 90s Bollywood films are so rewatchable
Most of these films are built around music, family and simple, strong emotions. The songs became part of daily life, and the dialogues turned into lines people still use. Watching them again feels familiar in a good way.
