What made Ludo work
Ludo had a big cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Rohit Saraf and Pearle Maaney. Each story was built around one of the four Ludo colours, and chance decided who lived and who lost.
It was funny, violent and oddly sweet. Basu has said in interviews that he has a sequel in mind, and T-Series’ Bhushan Kumar was reported to be backing Ludo 2, but no release date has been announced. Ludo streams on Netflix.

1. AndhaDhun (2018)
Sriram Raghavan’s thriller follows Akash (Ayushmann Khurrana), a pianist who pretends to be blind. One day he walks into a murder scene and has to keep up the act while the killer, played by Tabu, watches him closely.
Every twist leads to another, and the dark comedy never lets up. The film won National Awards for Best Hindi Film and Best Actor for Ayushmann. Where to watch: Prime Video, and JioHotstar with ads.
2. Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai (2020)
Anurag Kashyap’s Netflix film follows Sarita (Saiyami Kher), a Mumbai bank cashier stuck in a tired marriage. One night, bundles of cash start coming up through her kitchen drain. Then demonetisation is announced.
It is a quiet satire about money, marriage and middle-class dreams, with the same “what would you do?” tension Ludo plays with. Where to watch: Netflix.
3. Newton (2017)
Amit V. Masurkar’s satire stars Rajkummar Rao as Newton Kumar, an honest government clerk sent to run a polling booth in a Naxal-affected forest in Chhattisgarh. Pankaj Tripathi plays the security officer who would rather skip the whole exercise.
The film was India’s official entry to the Oscars and won the National Award for Best Hindi Film. If you liked Rajkummar and Pankaj Tripathi in Ludo, this is a must. It is not clearly listed on a major subscription platform in India right now, so check before you search.
4. Blackmail (2018)
Abhinay Deo’s dark comedy stars Irrfan Khan as Dev, a toilet paper salesman who finds his wife with another man. Instead of confronting them, he decides to blackmail the lover, and soon everyone is blackmailing everyone.
Irrfan, who died in April 2020, is brilliant in it, and the chain of bad decisions feels close to Ludo’s style. It is not currently listed on a major Indian subscription service, so check rental options.
5. Chhalaang (2020)
Hansal Mehta’s comedy stars Rajkummar Rao as Montu, a lazy PT teacher at a small-town school in Haryana. When a qualified new teacher (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) arrives and impresses everyone, including Neelu (Nushrratt Bharuccha), Montu has to prove himself through a sports competition.
It is lighter than the others on this list, but it shares Ludo’s small-town warmth. Where to watch: Prime Video.

Sanya Malhotra, who played Shruti in Ludo, leads this Netflix satire as a police inspector in a small Madhya Pradesh town assigned to find two missing jackfruits from a politician’s garden.
