Argentina had won the major championship in 1993. The squad also reached the 2014 World Cup final and the 2015 and 2016 Copa Cup finals under Messi’s captaincy.
However, the championship was not won. After the setback in 2016, the well-known footballer declared his retirement from international competition. On the supporters’ backs, he staged a comeback and guided Argentina to the 2018 World Cup.
