Movies to Watch on Disney+ Hotstar (JioHotstar) for a Good Cry

The best movies to watch on Disney+ Hotstar, now called JioHotstar, for a nice long cry are Coco, Up, Logan, The Fault in Our Stars, Toy Story 3, Inside Out, Soul, Jojo Rabbit and 10 Things I Hate About You. All nine were streaming on JioHotstar in India as of October 2026.

A quick update first. Disney+ Hotstar no longer exists as a separate app in India. On 14 February 2025, it merged with JioCinema to form JioHotstar, owned by JioStar. The Disney, Pixar and Fox films from our original list moved over, but four of our earlier picks, Love, Simon, Gifted, Clouds and Ron’s Gone Wrong, are no longer streaming in India. We have replaced them with four confirmed JioHotstar titles.

1. Coco (2017)

Lee Unkrich’s Pixar film follows Miguel, a boy who secretly wants to be a musician and ends up in the Land of the Dead and learns the truth about his family’s past.

It is colourful and funny for most of its run, and then its final scenes hit very hard. Keep tissues close. It streams in 4K on JioHotstar.

2. Up (2009)

Pete Docter’s Pixar film is about an old balloon seller who lifts his house with balloons and flies off towards South America, only to find a young boy has come along by accident.

Its opening minutes are among the most talked-about tear-jerkers in animation, and the rest of the film slowly puts you back together.

3. Logan (2017)

James Mangold’s film gives Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine a quiet, painful send-off. An ageing Logan is looking after a frail Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart, when a young mutant girl, played by Dafne Keen, comes into his life.

It is a superhero film in name, but it plays like a sad western about family and endings. The last scene is the one people remember.

4. The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

Josh Boone’s adaptation stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster and Ansel Elgort as Augustus Waters, two teenagers living with cancer who fall in love.

It is one of the most popular crying films of its generation, and it is still on JioHotstar. Watch it if you want a love story that does not pretend everything will be fine.

5. Toy Story 3 (2010)

Also directed by Lee Unkrich, this one finds Woody, Buzz and the gang facing a big change as their owner Andy prepares to leave for college.

If you grew up with the first film, the ending will get you. It is a film about growing up and letting go, and it lands harder the older you are.

6. Inside Out (2015)

Pete Docter’s film takes place inside the mind of a young girl, where her emotions, Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, try to steer her through a big move to a new city.

The film’s message is that sadness has a purpose, and it has made plenty of adults cry. The sequel, Inside Out 2 (2024), is not on JioHotstar in India right now.

7. Soul (2020)

Pete Docter’s third Pixar film on this list follows a music teacher who finally gets his big break as a jazz musician, just before an accident sends his soul somewhere else entirely.

It is a gentler cry than Coco or Up. It is more about the small things that make life worth living, and it stays with you after the credits.

8. Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Taika Waititi’s film follows Jojo, a lonely German boy during World War II, who finds out his mother, played by Scarlett Johansson, is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. Thomasin McKenzie plays the girl, and Waititi himself plays Jojo’s imaginary friend, Adolf.

It starts as a satire and is often very funny, which is why its emotional turn in the second half hits so hard.

9. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Gil Junger’s teen romance, loosely based on The Taming of the Shrew, stars Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik.

It is mostly a fun high school comedy, but one emotional scene near the end has made people cry for over 25 years. A good pick when you want a lighter cry.

Removed from the list: no longer streaming in India

Love, Simon (2018), Gifted (2017), Clouds (2020) and Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021) were part of our earlier list, but none of them was available on any streaming service in India as of October 2026. If they return, we will add them back.
