Dark is one of the most popular series streaming on Netflix and possibly the best sci-fi thriller around time travel and its facets.
It is the first Netflix original series with a german origin.
Created by Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese the series stars various actors including Louis Hofmann, Julika Jenkins, Andreas Pietschmann, Maja Schöne, Lisa Vicari, Lisa Kreuzer, Jördis Triebel and Oliver Masucci.
Divided into three parts, Dark has 26 episodes with a running time of 44-73 minutes. The third and last season was released on 27 June 2020.
The central plotline is itself a great choice for all the science buffs.
Dark generally focuses on time travel; its implications on the world and human individuality and particularly follow the story of four families who are alienated in the present but unravels the connections between them due to time travel stretching over several generations when a child from one of the family mysteriously disappears.
The entire series is set in the fictional German town of Winden.
The theme of the show is not only around science fiction and the supernatural.
It also delves into love, sacrifice, pain, selfishness, wishes, and desires of people and what it may eventually lead to in a world where traveling through time is possible.
Although several people found parallels between Stranger Things and Dark, the latter has its own intricate science and mythology that goes beyond the similar setting of the ’80s.
Anyhow, both of them are great for science fiction lovers.
Dark is not an easy watch rather it is mind-boggling. The theoretical approach of the show has been demonstrated in a precise and detailed manner.
Metaphors are not left behind and you will find several throughout the series.
So, you need to be patient to unfold the maze entrenched in the show. However, even with a slow pace, the whole series will appear to be a ticking clock.
The story-telling expertise has not lost in the intricacies of time travel so you are in for a perplexing plot and an effective narrative.
A third vital portion of this show is its striking cinematography. As you begin with the first episode, watch the opening credits very carefully.
It may be the only credit you will never skip because that’s how interesting it is and on top of that the soundtrack is equally good.
You will be able to perceive the ingenuity of the cinematographers. But wait it is only the beginning!
Generally, time-travel differences are shown by slightly (or wholly) altering the appearance of the cast or by using a diverse editing style.
Dark has its own uniqueness when it comes to distinguishing timelines. The series set different colours for changing time periods.
When we say it is ‘the best sci-fi around time travel’ we really mean it. It can be confusing at times and is sure to not make sense if you binge-watch it in a solo sitting.
You might have to re-watch several parts twice to keep track of the plot.
But if given the right amount of attention and interest, the series is a treat for especially sci-fi fans.
With the bleak setting with an astonishing plot and an unmatchable storyline rejuvenated through amazing actors, Dark is easily one of the most creative and complicated series you will ever watch.
