Critics have been largely positive about Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, the Malayalam romantic comedy starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju. Reviewers praise its humour, the lead pair’s chemistry and its everyday characters, with most ratings between 3.5 and 4.5 out of 5. It holds a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What is Bethlehem Kudumba Unit about?
The film follows Ashley, who moves with her family to Angamaly and meets Justin, a well-liked bachelor in his mid-thirties who lives next door. A shared love of music brings them together. Their age gap, and the people around them, complicate things.
It is a feel-good family romance in tone, with much of its humour coming from neighbours, relatives and daily conversations rather than big set pieces.

What critics liked
Santanu Das of Hindustan Times gave the film 4.5 out of 5 and described it as a story about second chances. Anandu Suresh of The Indian Express rated it 4 out of 5 and praised how carefully it handles the age-gap romance.
Latha Srinivasan of NDTV called the film warm and embracing, and liked the chemistry between Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju as well as its relatable, ordinary characters. Janani K of India Today said the film finds its joy in everyday moments and conversations rather than forced feel-good scenes.
Sreeju Sudhakaran of Rediff called it charming, mixing familiar humour with an unconventional love story. Athulya Nambiar of Koimoi credited the story for giving its female lead agency.
Reservations
Not every critic was won over. Gopika I. S. of The Times of India called it a well-made feel-good romance, but with flaws. Vignesh Madhu of The New Indian Express felt it may not be Girish A. D.’s best work, though still very enjoyable.
The strongest criticism came from Maria Teresa Raju of The News Minute. She argued that the way the film romanticises the age-gap relationship leaves a bitter aftertaste. This is the main point of debate around the film, so viewers who are uneasy with that theme should keep it in mind.
Who should watch Bethlehem Kudumba Unit?
Going by the reviews, this is an easy pick for anyone who enjoyed Premalu or likes light Malayalam family comedies with music and romance. Nivin Pauly fans will also find plenty to enjoy, as many critics see this as a strong outing for him.
Hindi-speaking viewers who usually wait for dubbed versions can now watch it too, since the JioHotstar release includes Hindi along with Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. If you liked recent Malayalam hits that rely on small-town characters and natural humour, the reviews suggest this one fits the same space.
Since it is now on JioHotstar in five languages, it also works as a family weekend watch. Viewers looking for a darker or more serious drama should look elsewhere. For more, explore our Movies and Reviews sections.
