10 best treasure hunting movies of all time

1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Sergio Leone’s western follows three men chasing a stash of Confederate gold buried in a cemetery during the American Civil War. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach play the trio, and Ennio Morricone’s score is as famous as the film.

The final three-way standoff in the graveyard is still one of the most copied scenes in cinema.

2. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones races the Nazis to find the Ark of the Covenant. Steven Spielberg directed it and George Lucas co-created the character. This is the first Indiana Jones film, not the second, as some lists claim.

Our earlier list had this film twice under two names. We have fixed that.

3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Indy goes after the Holy Grail, this time with his father, played by Sean Connery. The father and son scenes give the film more heart than most adventure movies, and the clue-solving in the final temple is pure treasure hunt fun.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow wants his ship back from a crew cursed by stolen Aztec gold. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley co-star. Depp’s odd, funny performance turned what looked like a theme park film into a global hit and a long franchise.

5. The Goonies (1985)

A group of kids finds an old map and goes looking for the lost treasure of a pirate called One-Eyed Willy, hoping to save their homes. Richard Donner directed it from a Steven Spielberg story. It is a family adventure about friendship, with traps, caves and a pirate ship.

6. Three Kings (1999)

At the end of the 1991 Gulf War, a group of American soldiers led by George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube sets out to steal gold from one of Saddam Hussein’s bunkers. David O. Russell’s film starts as a heist and turns into a sharp war drama.

7. The Mummy (1999)

Brendan Fraser plays adventurer Rick O’Connell, who leads Egyptologist Evelyn, played by Rachel Weisz, and her brother to the lost city of Hamunaptra in 1926. They wake the cursed priest Imhotep. It mixes horror, comedy and treasure hunting, and still holds up well.

8. National Treasure (2004)

Nicolas Cage plays historian Benjamin Franklin Gates, who believes a map to a huge treasure is hidden on the back of the US Declaration of Independence. His plan is to steal it before someone else does. The 2007 sequel, Book of Secrets, follows the same formula.

A third film has been in development for years. In October 2025 producer Jerry Bruckheimer said the script was close to done, with Cage expected to return, but there is no release date. The Disney+ spin-off series Edge of History was cancelled after one season in 2023.

9. Fool’s Gold (2008)

Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson play a divorcing couple pulled into a hunt for a sunken Spanish treasure known as the Queen’s Dowry. It is light and silly, more beach romcom than serious adventure, and works as a weekend watch.

10. Uncharted (2022)

A new pick for 2026. Tom Holland plays Nathan Drake, a young bartender recruited by Mark Wahlberg’s Sully to find the lost gold of Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet. Based on the PlayStation games, it has an airborne cargo crate fight and a finale with ships carried by helicopters.

Also worth watching

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) brought Harrison Ford back one last time, chasing a device built by Archimedes. It is weaker than the originals but fans will want to finish the series.

We dropped Inferno (2016) from this update. The Tom Hanks film is a pandemic thriller built around a puzzle trail, not a true treasure hunt.
