1. Sunrise at Tiger Hill
Tiger Hill is the highest point near Darjeeling town, about 11 km away near Ghum. Visitors leave around 4 am to watch the first light hit the Kangchenjunga range. On a very clear morning, you can also spot the peak of Mount Everest far to the west.
Tips: carry a heavy jacket even in April, as it is freezing before sunrise. Shared jeeps and taxis run from town every morning. The viewing gallery fills up fast in October and November.
2. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (toy train)
The toy train runs on a narrow 2 ft gauge line that opened in 1881 between Siliguri and Darjeeling. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1999 as part of the Mountain Railways of India. It is run by Indian Railways through the Northeast Frontier Railway.
Most tourists take the short joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back. Ghum, at 2,258 metres, is India’s highest railway station. Steam-hauled trains still run on some services, alongside diesel engines and newer vistadome coaches that were added when services resumed in August 2021 after the pandemic.
3. Batasia Loop
Batasia Loop is a spiral section of the toy train track, built in 1919 about 5 km below Darjeeling near Ghum. The loop lets the train lose height gently, and the garden inside it gives one of the best panoramic views of Darjeeling town and Kangchenjunga.
The loop also has a war memorial for Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army who died in action after Independence. The joy ride train stops here, so you can see both on one trip.
4. Nightingale Park
Nightingale Park, also called Shrubbery Park, is a small, well-kept garden on the ridge behind the Raj Bhavan. It looks out over the valleys towards the Kangchenjunga range and is a calm spot to sit after a day of sightseeing.
The park has a large statue of Lord Shiva and is a favourite with families in the evening. It is a short walk from the Chowrasta and Mall Road area, so it fits easily into a walking day.
5. Darjeeling Ropeway
The Darjeeling Ropeway, known as the Rangeet Valley Passenger Cable Car, runs from Singamari, just above the town, down towards Singla Bazaar in the valley. The ride passes over tea estates, forests and small villages.
Queues can stretch for hours in peak season, so go early in the morning. Services can stop for maintenance or bad weather, so check locally before you head out.
