The film won the Grand Prix at Cannes, and both leads won the acting prizes there. It is cold, difficult and not for casual viewing, but few films treat desire and control so seriously.
2. Chokher Bali (2003)
Director: Rituparno Ghosh. Cast: Aishwarya Rai, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Raima Sen.
Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s novel, the film follows Binodini, a young widow in early 1900s Bengal. Society expects her to give up every wish, and her quiet rebellion upsets an entire household.

3. Y Tu Mamá También (2001)

Two friends from different classes go on a road trip across Mexico with an older woman, Luisa, who is hiding a painful secret. What starts as a carefree trip turns into a story about class, friendship and mortality.
A narrator keeps cutting away to the country around the characters, which gives the film far more depth than its premise suggests.
4. Shame (2011)
Director: Steve McQueen. Cast: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan.
Fassbender plays Brandon, a successful New York professional whose compulsive behaviour is slowly destroying him. When his troubled sister moves in, his carefully managed life starts to crack.
The film treats addiction as loneliness rather than excitement. It is bleak, and it is one of Fassbender’s best performances.
5. Pariah (2011)
Director: Dee Rees. Cast: Adepero Oduye, Kim Wayans.
Alike, called Lee by friends, is a Brooklyn teenager quietly coming to terms with being gay while her religious mother refuses to see it.
The film is about identity and the right to want what you want. Dee Rees later made the Oscar-nominated Mudbound.
6. Raw (2016)
Director: Julia Ducournau. Cast: Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf.
Justine, a lifelong vegetarian, joins veterinary school and is forced to eat meat during a hazing ritual. A hunger she cannot control follows.
It is a horror film, and the hunger works as a metaphor for growing up and discovering desire. Ducournau went on to win the Palme d’Or for Titane in 2021.
7. In the Realm of the Senses (1976)
Director: Nagisa Oshima. Cast: Eiko Matsuda, Tatsuya Fuji.
The film is based on the real 1936 case of Sada Abe in Tokyo, whose relationship with her employer turned into an obsession that ended in his death.
It was heavily censored in several countries on release and is meant only for adult viewers. Today it is studied for its debate on art, obsession and censorship.
8. Gloria (2013)
Director: Sebastián Lelio. Cast: Paulina García.
Gloria is a divorced woman in her late fifties in Santiago who refuses to fade into the background. She goes dancing, falls for a man and learns that some people cannot let go of their past.
Paulina García won Best Actress at the Berlin film festival. Lelio remade it in English as Gloria Bell (2018) with Julianne Moore.
9. Lust Stories 2 (2023), new pick
Directors: R. Balki, Konkona Sen Sharma, Sujoy Ghosh, Amit Ravindernath Sharma. Cast: Kajol, Tillotama Shome, Vijay Varma, Tamannaah Bhatia, Mrunal Thakur, Neena Gupta.
This Netflix anthology has four short films on desire in Indian homes. The standout is Konkona Sen Sharma’s segment, about a woman and her domestic help, which looks at class and loneliness.
It released on Netflix on 29 June 2023 and is still streaming there. It is uneven, but it is the most mainstream Indian attempt on this list to talk about desire openly.
